I've just purchased the Navionics HD app for my Android tablet. Seems very good value for money to me so far but I only have 2 Gig internal memory on my tablet. Is there a way to direct the map downloads to the plug in SD card?

Nope, I havn't done this, I have no need, as I have 16Gb to play with and run a huge memory card where I keep all my programs so I can reinstall them anywhere.
Possibly your query should be directed towards the Whirlpool Forum as this after all is a sailing forum and not many people here may be in a position to offer the help you seek.
