Hi all, so I'm after a new main for my new Spacesailer 24. I've had a few quotes and the cheapest is from Sail Solutions in Sydney who will make me a new 6oz dacron Rolly-Tasker partial batten main with 2 reefs for $1300 delivered to Brisbane(where I live).

I've had a look at a few second hand sails but can't find anything even close to what I need, and I don't really want to spend money getting an old sail recut when I can put the money towards a brand new one.

Any ideas? Anyone know a cut price sail maker in Brisbane who does a half decent sail?

He made me a genoa in 13, still good, did not fall apart for 1300 bucks for my 28 Adams. 10m luff.

Good luck!

The thing with new sails is it is all about the cloth not the price.
Cheapest price will mean cheapest cloth usually and there is huge difference in quality and therefore longevity.
I also doubt that Sail Solutions will actually make the sail but it will be made in a wholesale loft in Asia and shipped to you if it is a Tasker sail.
Most cruiser sails regardless of brands are made at just a few wholesale lofts nowdays. China Sail Loft is an example.

I would try Ian Davis at Hood Sails at Glenora Street Wynunm but at least you will get a sail made out of Contender or Bainbridge cloth which will actually last in the Qld sun..

There are 2 reasonable sailmakers on the northside of Brisbane who will give good service and price.
Luke and Russ at LR Sails at Deception Bay Ph (07)3203 1330 mob.0400910618.
Gary Saxby at Saxby Sails at Cashmere. Ph. (07)3298 5586.
There is a big advantage using a local sailmaker when it comes to measuring and fitting the sail to the boat. Believe me it is never a simple as just ordering a sail and fitting it to the boat and going sailing.

Gary Saxby was the cheapest for a sail made out of good cloth a couple of years ago when I set up the 12 meter cat, and Evolution on the Gold Coast always do a good job.

gary at uk has been making my sails for 25 years you wont beat him for price in brisbane make sure when you get a quote your comparing the same quality of cloth and always remember the price of the cloth changes but not the labor, so its cheaper to use better cloth that will give longer performance where as cheap cloth will be made of rubber bands and stretch on its first outing

There's Oils or oils and there's Cloth and cloth. Go to a reputable sailmaker who will listen to what you are after and the requirements of your boat. Don't buy on price alone.

You will pay more for the good guy but will be able to call him up with any follow up issues. That in my book counts.

I've had the one sailmaker for many years and it's good to go back and look at the old designs before settling on a new order.

I went down the path of a new set of dacron sails lat year. Spoke to a local agent for Tasker, a fellow dinghy sailor I know. The price was good, but the deal fell apart when they wanted me to go and measure my boat for the sails. If it was wrong, it was my problem.

I ended up with a name brand, still made overseas, but they came out to the boat, measured, fitted and offered to do a first sail to setup the boat. Could probably have done cheaper, but the quality and service won me in the end.

As it turned out, they measured the boat wrong, the genoa was the wrong size entirely. They came out, took it away and I had the replacement within a few weeks.

If it is for Sydney, l could not speak highly enough about MacDiarmid or as he changed supplier Doyles MacDiarmid in Gladesville.
Good cloth, good price and service one would not find this side of the Pacific! Ten out of ten.
