hi I'm new to the forum and would like to just say kidday, I fish the port Stephens erea on my days off from working in the mines out west from newcastle, although I love my fishing I'm thinking seriously about selling my beautiful American Center consol boat and buying a sailing boat, I won't be rushing into this without getting some sort of expirence sailing off shore,I'm thinking of joining a club at newcastle or the the Soldiors point sailing club
I have a few questions I'd like to ask if that's alright,
would this be the right way to go joining a club and trying to get onto a boat on certain weekends,I see they race every Saturday at port Stephens maybe I should make my self known around there
also I can't afford to Moore a boat at a marina permanently so how do I go about getting a permanent mooring for a half decent sailing boat
thanks for any info will be muchly appreciated

Hi Marlin , yes joining a club is a great way to learn to sail and also learn about the different types of yachts . Crewing on various yachts while racing is a great way to learn the basics .

The crowd there will likely be the best way to get some info on the mooring situation as well

Happy sailing fair winds Marlin .......

Welcome to our great forum. Joining a club is a great idea as you will learn a lot about sailing and boat ownership if you ask enough questions. RMS NSW website have mooring maps and priority waiting lists you can peruse to find a mooring spot. A private mooring licence will cost approx $400pa, you will then have to have a mooring apparatus laid; cost dependent on boat and location but expect $1000 to $2000. Get some local knowledge on mooring locations as some effected by high winds and waves. Also consider dingy storage and access.

Thank you both for the replies, I'll be back down at he bay next weekend so I'll deffently check the yacht club out, it's right near the marina where I moore my boat when I'm there,i have noticed there are some older sailors that race there boats on the weekend at Soldiors point maybe they mite appreciate a hand with things on race day,
The permanent mooring sounds like it could be a problem, I checked the Soldiors point sailing club web site and there is a waiting list so this could put a damper on things, Any way I'll get a lot of handy info next weekend I hope
thanks again

Easiest way is to buy a boat and mooring at Port Stephens. Plenty of good boats come up for sale there. Then it's just a simple matter of transferring registrations.

Yep thanks ramona,iv been reading a lot of good info on this site,it's a wonderful site for for beginners looking to get into sailing, one thing iv learnt it's a very costly adventure owning yacht, I'll have to find out what the anti fouling costs will be every year at the marina, the guys there are very helpful with my boat now,and there's some nice yachts moored there atm,I was down there on Friday to get info but had to make a rush trip home for personal reasons (ageing parents) so am looking forward to get down there next Friday for a few days, after reading a great post earlier I'm thinking of toning my dreams down abit,I have no desire to travel the world in a yacht,I'd just like a good boat that I can stay in for a few days and sail to the islands off shore with friends and stay out there a for awhile fishing,my budget will be around 50k-70k,
i should be able to find a boat around the erea like you said, and that would suit me,I'm not keen to travel all over Australia looking for a boat, and then have the problem of getting it back to port stephens
im guessing selling boats is a slow process, which is a major worry, all my fishing boats have been boats that people jump at,and iv never had a problem selling them, for fair price,so getting in to deep with a boat worth over 100kor even more would be a nervous investment if things turn app crap,
maintenance is a major worry I'm along way away from the coast and on my days off I dint want to be scrubbing the deck if you know what I mean,
it's good fun looking for boats thought, there abusultly beautiful some of boat for sale and I can see why you guys are addicted to them,
thanks again appreciating the info

Hi ramona ,sorry you cannot transfer registrations on moorings to the next boat owner, when you hand in your tenancy of the mooring, it goes to the next in line.I tried to take lease of my daughters mooring when she sold her boat but I was told it goes to next in line. However I was lucky because at the time there was no one in toronto on the waiting list .It was just a matter of paying all the charges and fees $$$$ of course and they reimbursed my daughters fees( that had just been paid ) back to her.So It cost me the same as a new mooring.

Most people end up buying the wrong yacht first up. I would suggest starting with something like this.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CONTESSA-25FT-SLOOP-GOT-EVERYTHING-12HP-SLEEP-4-RACE-WINNING-BOAT-WITH-TENDER-/252029228921?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3aae1cd779

It may have the horizontal 12 hp Yanmar but is still a good buy for a delightful little yacht.

No head room in a Contessa have a look at a Top Hat, should suit you and a very good one is around 15K but plenty around for less.

Have a look at www.tophatyachts .com

Around here you can. It's pretty much depends on the local MSB bloke.
