Who has the best solution to keep Swallows away from your yacht?, Have parked up in a marina where the swallows are rampant and are not scared off to easy by decoys. In fact there is one vessel that at 5pm daily there are so many birds on it , it looks like a lamington.
I have tried owls ,. snakes , etc and they get covered in S***.
Do the Acoustic type work?

I don't have a remedy but have to admit they are a pest.
You can chase a whole lot off the bow and by the time you are back in the cockpit they are all up at the stern having a nicle little chatter among themselves as though nothing had happened. Now, if I had an air-rifle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Now, if you had an air rifle......... Air rifles make more noise than a .22 shooting long Z ammo, at best you can only fire it a few times before people become attuned to the noise and start looking for who is shooting and why. The other problem in the nanny state is that air rifles are now firearms and as such must be licenced. A much better option which I have successfully used is a blow gun made from 16mm alloy tube with darts made from nails with a flattened diamond shape point. They don't have much range so are not a threat to others and don't need to be licenced. With practice very acceptable accuracy can be obtained as attested to by the local Indian Mynah bird population, a declared pest.

What I find quite ironic is,

That when I was a delinquent teenager I could walk down the road with an air rifle over my shoulder (in Randwick, Sydney) and shoot every living thing I could see. (excluding humans) and no one batted an eyelid.
Now, as a lot more matured (my opinion) adult I can't even buy the slugs for the air-rifle without having to go through my adult son who has a permit and can therefore buy some slugs for me.
LooseChange, When I had a .22 before the Howard Govt decided to buy back the guns from responsible shooters but then leave them in the hands of the loopy s who were never going to hand their guns back anyway, I never used to shoot long Z ammo, I just used normal .22 longs.
While I am sure your long Z ammo is quieter than most air-rifles I really don't give a rats anus as my original quote was just hypothetical anyway.
On the flip side, it's quite relaxing sitting in the cockpit plinking away at targets floating away behind you in an anchorage without anybody knowing your enjoying yourself so much.
Double flip side. Nothing gets coconuts out of tree's like a 12 gauge.

You could just open all the skin fittings on your boat and watch it gracefully submerges below the waterline. The swallows then become someone else's problem.
The Fed Govt. would support that move and probably even fund it.
On the other hand, they might come out in support of the swallows.
Strange Govt. we have.
Can't blame them in these politically correct times.
Personally, I think swallows should be licensed, but I cant see a liberal Govt doing that but it would be another way of raising funds to support their worthy retirement scheme.

LooseChange,
How do I make a "flattened diamond shaped point". Do I need real diamonds for this or will industrial diamonds suffice ?
It sounds expensive but I guess it's a worthy cause.
Thank the Lord pelicans aren't a problem on the same scale.

lol, nothing like a good home brew,
I'll drink to that,
My recent enforced week at Island Head Creek was long enough to brew another eleven liters at 40%.
Can't complain about that.

What's the best % you get out of your rig and at what rate per hour? Unfortunately I haven't been in a position to run mine for several years and having just moved house and am still in the process of organising to suit me, the rig at this moment is still sitting under the house rather mute.

I cooked a brew yesterday and got 4.5 liters at 84% so that is roughly nine liters at 40% which is about where you want it.
I have no idea about rate per hour as I don't measure it on an hourly basis.
In general, I get between three and a half to four and a half liters at between 80% and 90% depending on the time of year with the cooler months providing a much better yield.
I usually brew three lots in a row as thats what a 25kg bag of Dextrose provides, so going on yesterdays yield I expect to get about 27 liters of 40% from my current bag of Dextrose.
That will keep me going for quite a while. I will do another batch in a few weeks time and that will be enough to get me through until next winter. Hopefully.

I measure it at an hourly rate as I want to save money by not having to run it longer than needed. You would get a slightly higher yield using sugar rather than dextrose. Dextrose will ferment faster being an invert sugar but you could invert sucrose using lemon juice thereby still having the fast ferment and a slightly higher output.

I have several stills, all home built and the best one puts out nearly 4 litres an hour at 96%. I used to belong to the distillers group on yahoo but left when the yanks started taking over.

Yup, you seem to be getting the hang of it.
After doing this for a while, you won't even care about, or notice the Swallows.

DAMA,
Ya can't just use any old blow gun. It has to have flattened diamond shaped points. LooseChange knows all about this stuff. We should listen carefully.
BTW, how do I listen to a post.

LooseChange,
The highest percentage I can remember getting was either 91% or 92% but then I only use commercial brewing products.
I have been brewing for about ten years and am mostly happy with the results.
I generally make Bourbon. I make it on wood chips if I want to drink it straight or I use an essence if I want to use it in mixed drinks.
I also do a few other spirits as well as Tia Maria and Baileys for the boat as I find most women prefer that to Bourbon.
I'm certainly not an expert but once I found what worked best for me I was happy to stop there and not bother experimenting.
It's certainly a lot cheaper than buying off the shelf spirits and as you know, there is a massive choice in what you can make.
