Went out to the boat the other day and found that one of the windows is almost completely unstuck. They were replaced by the PO (looks like a professional job) and only one is having an issue. They look to be acrylic and are glued to the GRP with black goop. Anyone have any idea what the goop would be? I'll probably get this one (re)done professionally. Don't want a big green one to wash the thing away!

But I'd like to know Just In Case it fails again.

The goop could be SIKAFLEX which sticks like the proverbial to the blanket, if it is fresh. The company is notorious for not accepting back product that has exceeded it's shelf life from their retailers so be wary of the use by date.

It comes in white or black.

If one window has come unstuck, the rest are probably about to.

Were I you which I am not but if I was, I would pull the lot off and fit new perspex or lexan (up to your budget) with silicon as a sealant and the windows attached by mechanical means such as 3/16" or 4mm bolts.

The silicon I would use is plumber's roofing sealant. If it can handle the sun on the roofs of Australian houses for 10 or 20 years or more, I am sure it will handle at least 5 years on your boat.

You can buy it anywhere for $5 to $8 a cartridge. Sikaflex or it's Australian made equivalent will cost you $20+ per cartridge and what you don't use will not keep.

It is the same old story mate. Put the word "Marine" in front of the product name or type and you will be ripped off usually. Hope this helps, Cheers Cisco.

Definitely go with the Sika products. The glue would be 252 for the windows but most importantly would be to also use the primer 215 otherwise nothing will stick over time. Should be able to get both from either Scomar or Bunnings. The lack of primer originally is more than likely the problem so I agree with Cisco that all the windows should be re-done properly.

Wow! Good old Sikaflex? I imagined it'd be some exotic super strong, hard to get, impossible to apply boatbuilder-only stuff. Sika is my favourite sealant and adhesive. No kidding... I've used it everywhere on my previous two boats. Have never used the primer but then I've never had it come unstuck from GRP before. And yes, it's expensive but easy to find here where I live from Bunnings, Whatsitworth and Biased.

Thanks, guys. If that's all it's likely to be then I'll give it a shot. For my own comfort, after it's cured a week or so I'll be sure to give the windows a good KICK. I figure if they can't take a kick, they probably won't take green water.

Hello Maxm
You may know this but better to be told twice then not at all. Just one thing I have found when some people (like the previous owner on my money hole) didn't do when applying the sticky goo to the acrylic window was to put an etched surface on the acrylic to help the sticky goo key in. Bit of sand paper does the job. The acrylic is to smooth for just about anything to stick to it permanently. It looks like it is working when you first do the job but once the goo has firmed up and the acrylic starts to expand and contract with the temperature changes, the seal breaks. My windows are like the windscreen of a car. There are no screws through them as they ride on a cushion of goo. Of course there is a plate screwed down around the out side they can't escape.

I use a product from a company called FIXTECH marine Solutions. They put out all types (and colours) of sticky goo for different purposes. The guys on the phone are also very helpful. www.fixtech.com.au.

Good luck. One of my pet hates is leaks.
