Thought I might start a thread to discuss the Pebble Watch on the water - for sailing in particular.

I use a Pebble watch because of its great visibility in full sunshine & it's always on! I've created a few free apps to help my sailing which you're welcome to use. Two that may be of interest are Tide Watch (a watchface) and StartLine for Pebble (a watchapp). The StartLine app provides on-wrist data from Allan Edwards' great (free) app for Android to help you Start & Race better. Our starts have improved considerably since using it. (They needed to!!)

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.L36.startline
https://apps.getpebble.com/en_US/application/54a7586e2a5f3d851400014a

Search for Tide Watch in Pebble watch faces, StartLine in Google Play or in the Pebble watch store. Enjoy!

If you know of good Pebble apps that help you on the water, please let us know!

The Flintstones were the modern Stone Age family. Residing in Bedrock, Fred Flintstone worked an unsatisfying quarry job, but returned home to lovely wife Wilma and eventually daughter Pebbles. Fred, a big fan of golf and bowling, also enjoyed bullying neighbor Barney Rubble, while Barney's saucy wife Betty was best friends with Wilma. During the show's run, Barney and Betty would adopt an unnaturally strong son, Bamm-Bamm, who would become friends with little Pebbles. "The Flintstones," heavily inspired by "The Honeymooners," convinced a generation of children that dinosaurs and humans occupied the planet at the same time.

Pebbles on board are a good deterrent to unwelcome visitors.

Thanks for your post and heads up on the app.

The flavour here is mostly cruising sailing mixed with a healthy dose of scepticism but thanks anyway.

All positive input is gratefully accepted.

...........as are tacks liberally spread around the deck. I read in his book that's what Joshua Slocum did to discourage the bare footed locals from visiting after dark when he stoped at various anchorages in Tierra Del Frago! Would have loved to have a go pro set up on deck to capture the moment of realization

In all seriousness the Velocitek provides a standalone device that gives heading, SOG, start time sequence and a GPS ping to both ends of start line. Otherwise Ockamsoft 5 or Expedition are going to make a pebble watch look like a Mickey Mouse watch.

You're an evil bugger aren't you?? That is a bit like when Cap'n Nemo electrified the deck on the Nautilus in 2,000 Leagues Under the Sea (if you are old enough to remember the movie like I).

JayEm, I have a Pebble and I have a couple of apps that are good for tide, speed and CoG etc. It's a good addition to the dedicated technology I have on board as well.

Thanks for sharing the additional apps, which I'll definitely have a look at them.

Ignore the trolls, it's such a shame that there are people who seem to have to belittle another's ideas, just because they don't understand them.

Couldn't agree more about the trolls. The usual definition of a troll is one who joins a forum and in their first post promotes some crappy product or invites you to BUY an app. Maybe JayEm is not a troll but he sure started out like one!

Perhaps I'll be called a Troll for this, but I don't think JayEm was guilty of this.

Quote from Wiki -
In Internet slang, a troll (/'tro?l/, /'tr?l/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

There was no solicitation to "Buy" anything - they're free apps.
"Crappy" is a subjective term - I guess you're welcome to your opinion, but in this case it counts for about the same as mine. Or anyone's for that matter.
"Troll" according to the Urban Dictionary means - One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.

I like almost all of your posts, and as a relatively inexperienced sailor I reckon I can learn a lot from you. Personally I don't mind your blunt and straight-forward style of communication, but your Flintstones response was condescending and patronizing - it was a dick move, classic trolling. I may be relatively new to both sailing and this DB, but I'm not new to DB's in general, and I reckon that of anyone in this thread at least, you're the troll.

YMMV.

its quite easy to be succinct , when you copy and paste straight from a pro writers blurb. Google "the Flintstones" and see what comes up !! someone else,s words . and no credit .

the original posters info may have been worth looking at , so i will have to go back and have another look . after being distracted buy the copy and pasted rubbish ..........

well the misunderstanding on my part was that i thought the original poster had an undisclosed business interest hence what I thought was a numerous response to a situation that is not great for a forum.I took this as the motivation for Frant's and Cisco's reply and I may have been wrong in my assumption re flogging a business interest and if so apologize.
Never the less i feel that the accusation of trolling is over the top and likewise having a go at copy and pasting. SandS as well as MickM the negative comments.....you just may be barking up the wrong tree and being as counterproductive as those at the receiving end of your agro?

No kidding SandS!

No business interest whatsoever. Just a hobby I thought others might appreciate. I was (mostly) wrong. The original post was deleted by me so I could re-post on the sailing forum without violating the cross-posting rules. I've been active on other forums & seen nothing but constructive responses. I'll stick to them insteadI think.

I race on a budget, so free is good.
I use my (watch) screen outdoors so e-paper is outstandingly readable in full sunshine.
I would like to create custom apps so an open api & online sdk is amazing.

Bottom line - by using Allen's (free) app and my Pebble display, we have moved up the fleet quite a way.

Contribute if you're interested. If all you can do is criticise, go find a forum on the subject.

Well I for one stand corrected and humbley apologies.
In my defence though, even though I thought the same as Frant (in this particular case), you did contribute to another post so I said nuffin
