A few good people have been suspended of late. Most would agree, without knowing all the facts, that there might have been better a better way to handle things.
I think it would be a good idea if we elected one or two people to provide the moderators with some assistance when or if a suspension may become iminent.
People like Cisco or Ramona, who post on here a lot and seem to have universal respect from most of us would be good candidates.

I have deliberately decided to stay away from the forum mostly while the aggression barometer was peaking but now feel the time is right for my 2c's worth.
A bit of moderation, when necessary could go a long way toward avoiding the pitfalls we have seen recently, however, not the type of moderation that continually edits posts etc and places undue demands on the moderators. On a professional audio forum I frequent, one of the forum rules is to have your real name in a signature at the bottom of each post. This can also slow down the decent into the abyss that some threads seem to sink......... Speaking of the abyss, maybe it would be a good option to have such a virtual space to send posters permanently, who persist with trolling of the non fisherperson kind. What we have seen here is the reasonable and personable poster stand up to the unreasonable pot stirrer and cop the same penalty. If this was to continue, the unreasonable is only encouraged to continue unabated in their original aim and intent and injustice on this micro public stage would continue. I for one hope this does not continue to be the case.
Sailing is for those who value a wide horizon:)

The red haze descends and people charge ahead, totally oblivious or ignorant to the warning signs that "nothing" good will come of it. Then stand there dazed, confused and/or disappointed at the real consequences for their actions.

Until recently, the sailing forums didn't have a need to be moderated. Unfortunately the last few weeks has brought out some bad in people

If moderator moderates more than one forum it is hard to folow "spirit" of the posters. Big YES from me for allowing most active forum member(s) to advise moderator(s) in their decisions. We are all the same, but every one is diferent and we may tolerate some more than others.

But that is the intention of the thumbing system. On the other forums it is lost due to people getting 'red thumbed' just purely because of a difference in opinion, or belief.

It didn't get used much in the sailing forum because people here generally respected each other.

The forums actually have rules: www.seabreeze.com.au/Members/Help/ForumRules.aspx
They are quite reasonable IMHO and are clearly set out. I recommend a quick read for anyone interested or concerned about recent events on this forum.
Like many others, I hope that those members recently 'sin binned' will return to continue to share the best of their knowledge and experience with us all - warts and all!

Thanks but no thanks. I wouldn't have time to go sailing if I took that on.

We are all sensible enough people here on the sailing forum and the group is quite capable of self moderating as exampled by the several of us speaking up about inappropriate posts which seemed to be settling the situation down.

Somebody obviously pushed the issue and PMd the moderators which I believe was unnecessary.

What is done is done so let's just get on with this great forum and show the respect for each other like we normally do.

some forums allow a person to ignore a members post. it stops things going down a slippery slope of baiting and arguments.

Well, this was unfortunate but unavoidable on the long run.
One should realise the fact that we are all animals, regardless of the believe that we are civilised, we are not, not by nature, not by a long shot.

This is the reason and the necessity to have 'The State'.

As we humans are incapable to co-exist peacefully, self regulation never worked, never works and never going to work.
We are just what we are and we have to be beaten into submission from time to time, no matter what.

This is not you or me or him, it is us.

(I hope you all have seen the movie...?)

No disrespect intended but I totally reject all you have said there.

I am not an animal. I am civilised and I can co-exist peacefully with just about anyone (my next door neighbour excluded ).

Blind acceptance of external authority over one's self is for the meagre minded.

"The State" is what compels me to go sailing, God bless it.

This is a weighty philosophical issue this one, and at the core of some of the biggest decisions i have made along the way........ Free will and all that stuff ;) I agree with sirgalivant, yes, we are animals and I agree with cisco and samsturdy. This is my take on it. On the bigger picture every society needs checks and ballances to keep to a minimum the actions and consequences of those who would abuse others or the freedoms we have, for their personal gain. This forum is the same only on a micro level.
Blind acceptance of external authority will leave that authority open to unchecked corruption. The initial 'benevolent dictator' may be a fine principled person but there will be a power play when his/her replacement comes along and the one who wins may be a Joseph Stalin!'
So the elephant in the room is?............Abbott hands off the ABC! Ha Ha!

HG...welcome back my son. We've all missed you and no doubt you have been reading some of the accolades,
but like the gentleman you are, you probably won't respond.
The whole incident has created much discussion and some philosophies, but what are you doing posting from WA.????.

The ABC budget wouldn't be enough to fix up the state our defense forces are in........ but I can see where you are coming from with only helicopters to play with they are not in a great position. ABC budget is $1.22 billion, the defense budget is 31.9 billion.

Well, I suppose you could sell the ABC to Rupert so we could have some unbiased independent press in this country for the health of our democracy. Then journalism would fulfill it's roll with thorough investigative journalism, as a check and balance in the democratic process to keep the bastards honest. Also that would go a long way in preventing the media in good old Australia from being mostly a monopoly wouldn't it...............? Nah, sell the ABC , buy a yacht and go sailing ;)
