I was looking at various wind readings on seabreeze today as its a fair blow around Port Phillip and I came across what seems to be an anomaly. Can anyone shed light on why Seabreeze is showing Maatsuker as having a Northerly of 10 knots or less?

the AWS at matt is on the north western side so in anything from the east it actually gives a false reading due to being in the lee

Windyty is also forecast wind whereas Willyweather is also forecast but with up to date weather observations. Seabreeze I believe is also Bom derived (forecast) but IIRC also is updated from actual observations and informs can also be uploaded direct from personal/private stations. But as chesty eluded to, even BoM winds would depend on were the weather station is situated.

Sorry for delay in replying, but I have a nautical excuse - dropped my phone & tablet in the sea!

Chesty is right. The Automatic Wind Station is sheltered from the East and is influenced by wind funneling up a gully. It more or less always reads NW ish. The manual observations by the caretakers at 6am and 9am are much more accurate. If you're out there and need an accurate wind reading, you can always call or radio the caretakers. They can't forecast, but can give you a reading.

I'm going to have a look and see what they got in the wild weather over the weekend!

Cheers
