Interested in the process you are going through, apart from the registration cost, what are the other things, apart from boat naming?
Surely the boats name is not the only indentifier? When I google AIS sites I get lots of similar boat names?
It would be sad to have to rename your boat after 50 years!

Whilst these superstitions are quaint, they're just myths.

Shame to rename the boat but don't worry about Neptune's revenge.

Still, it's a good excuse for a renaming ceremony, complete with appropriate libation!

Seebreasy73, the state registration departments aren't at all concerned with the names of a vessel. They are identified by their state registration.
The Australian Ships registry do concern themselves with a name and as you have discovered there can only be one of.. Why don't you consider adding to the existing name.

Yeah, but that is absolute rubbish. It's a shame there is no federal registry to avoid such a thing. Besides, my boat was christened with the name 20 years earlier, so why should I be the one to compromise? Or at least the registry should compromise and allow for a dupplicate name registration for cases like this.

Because somebody else registered their boat on the Australian registry first. Why should they change the name of their boat?

Are you intending to sail internationally?

You could just add something to the existing name like II or 2 or +

not it intending to hi jack your thread, my yacht has numbers only as her registration, as in 56951. She is registered in NSW with that number.
i assumed all NSW boat registration number had an N at the end.
my yacht is of German origin, so could she have been Australian registered in the past? IE sailed out by a previous owner?

also Seabreezy, May we ask your yachts current name?

foot note, I can answer my own question after searching AMSA
no she was not registered, my number, with an 8 in front is registered to TOMC.

Interesting not if you are permanent resident, like me, you can only register a vessel up to 12 metres, mine is 11.4

i see see some names are obviously changed or added to enable registration without really changing. I looked up the name Condor
now Condor the 1983 Maxi residing in the Whitsundays is registered as "Condor of Airlie Beach". Among the 3-4 other Condor like names. Maybe Seabreezy can work out a compromise that still retains the main concept of the boats original name?

You're a sailor. If you didn't believe in tradition you'd have a motorboat. Half the fun of sailing (or maybe a quarter of the fun) is following on traditions. So make a proper party of it and go through the official, Poseidon approved, methodology of renaming your boat. Hell, one of the reasons my boat is named Foolish Muse is because the Muses were the daughters of Zeus, and Poseidon had a thing for them. It just made good sense to name my boat after something Poseidon likes. And so far it has proven a successful strategy.

well, I am still not a-muse-d, I wrote to the body to see if they would somehow allow a dupplicate name. After all, there are so mani Dick Smiths walking around and nobody stopping them from going abroad...

If all you want is the same name, then just do NAME II or NAME III or NAME IV. Officially these are completely different names of the boat.
