One for the brains trust..

I'm looking at a 36ft boat on The Tree.

The vendor can barely construct a sentence, let alone correctly spell the designer's name. I've spoken to him and he's not very helpful.

It's something like POTTGEIER or POTTGIER or POTTIGER.

I know I've read something about them before, but I can't remember and Professor Google is not playing ball.

Thoughts???

Thanks.

Bit of a long shot Selkie, but, could Pottgier be a corruption of Pilot House. There are several designs designated as such.

Hi Sam
Maybe? But I don't think so. However, yes, it is somewhat akin to a pilot house.

I know I've seen this design in the past but, without a wildcard search facility, I'm darned if I can find any reference to them.

Have looked at this listing before also.. Here is some additional info for you:
Designed and built by Michael Potgieter, which likely means it is a one off. He is Australian not French and may actually be part of or was part of the brokerage YOTI at some point which means nothing but was just a side tidbit to chew on.

Another old ad with some more info and photos. http://www.yachtandboat.com.au/classifieds/ad/7635/potgeiter-36-cruising-boats-nsw

Actually I think he is South African. The name Potgieter means I think a pot foundry man. The design looks interesting but has been over priced for a one off.

He may have a background there or he may not but the info I saw showed him at YOTI and mentioned this actual boat being listed for sale with YOTI at the time. It also mentioned that he or someone with the exact same name was the designer and builder. Is he Australian? How many centuries do you need to be here to be considered Australian these days? A name does not make you belong to a nationality though.

Oh and the correct spelling which I typed wrongly above is Michael Potgeiter not Potgieter.

I ended up finding an article he had written for, um, I think it was Sail Magazine many moons ago. Then a very critical reply by a reader.

He is described as a bit of a Renaissance Man dabbling in not only yacht design, but many other things. It stated he lived in Margate, Australia, which is, I'm assuming, the Tasmanian Margate rather than my neighbouring Margate here in Qld.

At the end of the day, I think there's better out there and the vendor is dodge!! with a capital D!!! Tells me he will only supply part of a survey report until a deposit is paid; won't provide HIN and rego to do an encumbrance check. Sufficient red flags to say, "run away"

Thanks anyway for all your help. And so the search continues

Seeing so many of those ourselves trying to buy a boat. Sellers that won't answer the phone or won't return a call is the latest round of frustrations.
