Reggie died today. Affectionately known by his staff as Mr G. I worked for Mr G for about 4 years on MY Boadicea. Reggie was a really nice man. He wasnt into schmoozing or big fancy dinners with people. His wife loved it though, but Reggie was the one who instructed us to get the guests off the boat asap after a dinner or something. When i first met Reg I was on the aft deck in fort lauderdale. He had some VIP guests onboard, but we'd never met. He came straight up to me and shook my hand , introduced himself and asked me my name. He did Yoga everyday and ate very healthy food - as did his dogs! (We use to have to grow actual real grass for the dog to do its business on on the aft deck!)
Reggie was a passionate photographer and produced a few books. 1 of my jobs when he was aboard was to drive him around the bay of islands following dolphins to photograph. When lunch was ready on MYboadicea, he was picked up in the limo tender and i was left to follow the dolphins around so he could resume photographing them.
I guess in the yachting industry he was probably the nicest guy you could work for. We were very well looked after, with full medical insurance, flights anywhere in the world when on leave(i lived in Germany and the boat would fly me to Sydney from there)
Every year him and Joy would renew their marriage vows and get married at their home in Bermuda which we all would attend and help out with everything - even stuff not to do with boating. I was part of his life for a while i guess. He owned one of the apartments in Circular Quay and we would move his furniture around for him, then motor up to Brisbane and install it in joys new place on the river.
He lived til 92 and all of us that were lucky enough to know the man feel sad. He had a good innings and did alot with his life.
Him and Joy were very much in love and for a really long time too. Im sure she will be most upset.
RIP Mr G.

little story about us getting the boat prepared for yet another Reg wedding.
We'd been in the med doing charters without Reggie onboard. We had some Russians on for the summer. Quite painful. Straight after all these charters we had to get the boat ready to go to Bermuda from Spain to Mr G's house.
This involved getting Turf and laying it on the Upper Deck Aft for the Grundys dog (only ate Organic too!) and looking after that grass.
We just got a new Chief Engineer. When Bunkering in Mallorca he accidently put 301 tonnes of Diesel instead of 300.
At about 3am all the deck crew were made to get up to clean the decks. We'd just spent months chartering. No days off. Waking up at this time in the Atlantic to clean decks certainly didnt make the new chief engineer very popular. He didnt care though. That was the kind of guy he was. He didnt last long.
So the diesel spewed out the chimneys on the top deck and killed all our grass. The teak decks that had been just been brightened etc for the wedding were covered in diesel and needed to be cleaned again. Diesel everywhere. We worked very hard til about 7am. went back to bed but still had to be up for 8 to work 8 hours...
We diverted to fort lauderdale due to storms around bermuda and the wedding venue was changed from Mr G's house in bermuda to Fort Lauderdale.
Alot of the crew didnt have the B1/B2 Visa to go into USA by boat, so we went to the bahamas and dropped people off who had to fly into the US.
