Thinking of going to Raby Bay (Qld) next weekend (to get of the piss with some friends ). What's the go with the channel? The keel likes about 1.85m. Is the channel assessable only around high tide or at any stage of the tide?

I've been in there a couple of times Crusoe, you should have no problems, I draw 1.4m and had plenty of depth.

Unless you have a dock in there be aware that you could get moved off the public wharf at around 0400 by the fishing tour boats with lots of strong language! No place to anchor.

I have used the marina in there but be aware that they will NOT give back your key deposit. That cost me an extra $40 Caused quite a stir as I had to demand to be let back into the marina so I could sail out!

When I got booted out last time ended up dropping the anchor just off the fairway about 2 buoys out. Didn't get much sleep as the stink boats were going full tit with huge wakes, should have moved 1/2 mile along beach.

Might be better to anchor off and use your dinghy which you could lock up on the shallow side of the public dock.

I'm in Raby Bay Marina there is 2.8m in the centre of the main channel at low tide.
Take the channel on the western side to get to the marina.

Stay alert as the channel rises sharply on either side. Coming in at low tide you will see the exposed sand banks either side.

Thanks Nswsailor & seabird for the information. Glad to hear there is plenty of water there.

Looks like I might need to be more concerned about the overdraft than the draft

Yep, Raby Bay channel does have 2ft to spare under my 6ft keel at low tide. Arrived at Mid night on Friday and left at 6am Sunday when the rain woke me up. Got to see the mud (or sand) flats either side of the channels as I headed out. Spend a nice day out at Peel on Saturday consuming plenty of fluids to combat the heat. Nice spot and the winds gods gave me nice sailing conditions for both heading over and back.

Even got $40 dollars back on the $50 key deposit at the marina.

Thanks for you advice Nswsailor & seabird.

What???? Did they fine you $10 for having a pee over your transom at midnight instead of walking 100 meters to the marina gate and back to the boat again because you forgot the key and then didn't quite make it and peed your pants anyway.

Strewth!!! What is the world coming too???

That's the only marina that did that to me on both trips I've done to the Whitsundays.

They get a rating!!

I only go in there to visit the previous owner of my Top Hat as he is rather old now.

Yeah, I can't see how they justify the $10 tip on the key deposit.

But if your have ever been to the Mackay Marina and paid $6 to wash your clothes and then $6 to dry them, this seem a bit over the top as well. Also stayed there for about 3 months on the monthly rate and as I had about 3 more days in the marina before going into the slip yard, they charged me the day rate for the last 3 days. Bit rude I thought.

Was over in Port Vila, Vanuatu and the girl in the marina office there could teach some of these Aussie marinas about customer service.

Currently use the Mooloolaba marina most of the time, not the cheapest, but they are friendly, helpful and take your money with a smile. I like it here.

Is that at the Yacht Club or the Wharf Crusoe??
And how much do they charge?
Lawries Marina looks very crowded and a bit of a hassle to get in and out.

I'm usually at the yacht club. Had my name down to try and get into Laurie's for years but a place never seemed to come up for my 40 footer. I actually did stay there for a months when transiting through Mooloolaba a few years back and yes, it was a bit tight. Actually had to spin the boat around on a windless day before attempting to leave. There is no way my boat could have made the turn in reverse. I was on the furtherest pen in, up against the main walkway.

It costs me $2205 per quarter at the yacht club.

That is not a bad deal for what I assume would be a 12m berth in a place like Mooloolaba. Works out at $170/week on the quarterly rate and I also assume like most places you have to pay the fee up front.

I have my 30 footer in the slip yard at Bundaberg Slipways which is costing me a discounted rate of $135/week, the discount being based on that I am only getting 50% work time in or less. The recent rain and now the heat wave making sure of that.

The reason I asked about Mooloolaba is that wifey wants us to live on the Sunny Coast closer to daughter there and son in Brisbane.

Me??? Well I have a fore and aft mooring licence in the Burnett River only 10 mins from home which costs me less than $50 per annum. I am required to occupy it 60% of the time. If I was to berth at Mooloolaba for the 40% time, amortized over 12 months a berth there would cost me less than $70/week.

The other option is to get on the pile berths closer to the mouth of the river. Not sure what the cost is but a lot cheaper than the marinas. I tried getting one of these but had no luck. But I didn't put much effort in the way of annoying the crap out of the guy who runs the show to ensure he was thinking of me when one came available. The guy was Kevin, 0407587862 and has the job title "Mooloolaba Harbour Control"

But wait, there's more!!! Another option is to rent a pontoon from one of the people who live on the channels. This is a fairly common practice and again a lot cheaper than the the marinas. There is plenty of empty ones to be seen when motoring around.

Yes I know of the pile berths but I seem to recall somebody saying there is nowhere to store a dinghy and no launching ramp close to the piles.

Renting a pontoon on a canal is a good option. How do you find them? Do people advertise them on Gumtree or BoatPoint or somewhere else?

Not sure how people get in touch with the canal pontoon owners. I have seen the odd one advertised over the years on the sailing club notice board. You might need to try the direct approach and do a door knock. Motor around the canal to find a likely candidate first, then maybe leave a note in their letter box.
