guess the easy thing to do is jump the wires with new cable, before the hassle of routing from front to rear?

Had similar symptoms recently, which in my case turned out to be a problem with the cable in the mast.
Because the anemometer itself has some internal signal conditioning electronics, it's output is proportional to wind speed over the range of approximately 2-5V, so your reading is probably ok.
An intermittent reading usually indicates an intermittent physical connection, rather than a problem with the electronics. So, the first step is to check the integrity of the connections both ends of the cable.
Once the possibility of the above connections being the cause of the problem is eliminated, the quickest next step is to disconnect the yellow wire at both ends and replace it temporarily with another.
