Hi

Can anyone recommend a good, TRUSTWORTHY diesel mechanic in Sydney?

The boat is in Five Dock Bay near the Gladesville Marina.

Many thanks

From the sound of it this is the boat you are looking at.

https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kellyville-ridge/sail-boats/sailing-cruising-yacht-1993/1180676191

At $15,000 it is a cheap buy for a VDS 34,...BUT,....this boat is going to cost a fair bit more than that before you can confidently take it anywhere.

The engine has problems the vendor is not prepared to fix and a 48 hp Diahatsu is way too much horsepower for that stamp of yacht so add another $15,000 to repower it with say a 3 cylinder 30 hp Kubota which will be more than ample.

To help fund that you could take off that useless bowsprit and furler and sell it.

The stainless steel shed/oven over the cockpit will brown roast chickens very well if you want to go into business.

I had a look at the English built S&S 34 for sale in Bundaberg for $36,000 yesterday, just on the outside in the cradle. If you are real tough you might be able to screw a deal on that one for $10,000 less.

Also there is a nice little Quest 8 here in Bundy that can be owned for $3,000. If I did not have my Lotus 9.2 already, I would own the Quest 8.

Don't let that cash burn a hole in your pocket Selkie.

I'm not a diesel mechanic but am pretty good at making them go and assessing likely problems. I agree with cisco, that engine is way overpowered for this size vessel. It will be interesting to see how they shoe horned it in.
If you wish PM me and I would be happy to have a look at it with you. It is just around the corner from my place and from MB and I am very cheap, maybe a coffee will do it.

The engine is a Diesel Daihatsu from a Charade complete with the gearbox! The engine is not the turbo version so is no where near 48 hp. Good installation and good access. It's not running but sounds fine when cranking over and I suspect it's just an air leak in the fuel system. Owner was told by a mechanic friend it might have a bent exhaust valve. If that was the case it would have fired but it certainly did not.

That S&S is nice. Already had a massive price drop.

that would be 48hp at full noise but if you run it where it put out max torque it be around 16-1800rpm but 25 hp and use less fuel

Let Morningbird have a fiddle with the motor first. He's pretty good at this sort of thing.

Yep. Hoping to next week if she's still available.
Planning to fly down and see whether the boat sings to me
