Hi All,

I have just purchased my first yacht, a 1970s Red jacket. Over the years it seems each owner has had their own take on how to rig it up and not much of what remains is original. Currently it is set up without any winches and looks to be a pain to sail in any sort of breeze.

I have been looking around a few yacht clubs to get ideas on how to set up the rigging but I have only come across Red Witches. Whilst these are probably really similar I'd really appreciate it if anyone has a photo or an idea of where to check out a Red jacket in Perth (other than those rotting away on moorings!) showing a decent setup.

Thanks,

Dave

Go to www.trailersailerplace.com.au/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=2 and search for Red Jacket. Quite a few posts, and Mel on that site is a devotee, after trying different boats.

Looking at a few pics online I would say the jib is small enough that you should get away with a 2:1 set up on the jib sheet.

The only time the loads may require a winch is the spinnaker brace/guy but we manage on the Etchells (much larger spinnaker) so I think you'll be OK.

As for halyards, a good cunningham will do for getting main halyard tension and maybe look at a purchase to attach to the jib halyard for more purchase.
