The bad luck associated with renaming of boats goes back to the Viking days.
The Vikings would build their boats on the beach using slave labour and logs gathered from the hills behind the beach.
When the boat was built they had run out of logs but needed something as rollers to run the boat into the water. They still had plenty of slaves so they used them instead. The champagne we splash on the bow of a boat when we launch it is symbolic of the slaves blood.
When a boat was pulled out of the water, refurbished and was to be renamed, they used the slaves as rollers again.
It was certainly bad luck for the slaves.

Exactly which gods need to be appeased and ceremony to be used I couldn't say but if the sacrifice of a good measure of alcohol keeps the bad luck away, I am all for it.
