As most know I have a Top Hat.

I'm seeking advice on what furling system would be best for my Top Hat.

Looking for best for value and pitfalls with those out there.

One I have looked at is Reefurl.

My Profurl has proven to be fool proof. Been on the boat for 6 years and haven't touched it apart from a freshwater hose occasionally.

I refuse to use other names! The onlything I would like to add is new control line as mine is old and stiff! Gee that sounds weird. Should I replace it with a nice spectra?

Reefurl are cheap and nasty. The halliard system on them induces fore stay sag.

Another brand is the Alado from Brazil. They seem to be a good quality build but like the Reefurl the halliard sheave is on the top section of the foil and therefore induces fore stay sag.

Edit:- Link to Alado.

I have a Profurl. It recently seized up but I was able to get it freed up again. Apart from that no trouble, and just needs more regular use.

Guess I have to do some disclosure, I previously have worked for Wichard who own/manufacture Profurl.
There are only 2 reliable options available in Australia, Profurl or Furlex. Harken have recently released a new cheaper range, but the quality in comparison to their previous models has decreased significantly.
Both Furlex and Profurl have their pro's and con's.
Pm me if you needs any specific details but I would be choosing a Profurl if I was buying a furler tomorrow.

Thanks Brett,

I'm going for the Profurl C290 when I do it.

Yes both those are great furlers but saying they are the only reliable ones is not quite right.

The Reefit is a fantastic furler and made in Oz with ALL spare parts carried in Oz too.

The Reefit B might be a bit big for a Tophat although I installed one recently on a 31ft yacht and it looked great.

I sold my reef furl for $100 and sailed with the pro furl for a number of years nothing beats the furlex now!
