I am back to working on MB rather than sailing her while I fix the toilet. I have the electric motor off the toilet but I suspect it is going to be pronounced dead on the bench if I can ever get it apart. the screws are soaking in wd40 as we speak.

To the point. My Simrad TP32 is working fine, I used it for a run around Scotland Island this afternoon, but is a bit noisy which might be a loose belt. I've had it for about 6 years and apart from a few multi day ocean passages it has had an easy life. I have it at home and am trying to figure out how I change the drive belt.

I googled and youtubed it to death this afternoon but cannot find anything on how to get the old belt out and the new one on. I have a spare belt but the only instructions with it are how to change the earthing strap. It refers to the manual for belt changes, the manual has nothing on the subject.

Has anybody any ideas on how it might be done? If nobopdy knows I'll call SIMRAD on Monday.

Yep, the 10 and 20 have a worm drive. The 32 has a screw drive and is incredibly robust. Even Cisco was impressed by its ruggedness.
The belt is supposed to have less than 6mm movement, 3mm each way. Mine is close to that and as I have a new belt it is worth fitting just as a service activity.

As I recall the unit is fairly seamless, as in I didn't see how it could be opened up. From the flogging it copped bouncing around when disconnected on the LHI trip I thought the only thing that will break it is a hammer.

You might recall I did mention on the way back that I thought it was a bit juddery in operation. That may be the toothed belt jumping on the cogs so maybe it is due for the new belt.

If Simrad have an Australian Service agent it would be worth giving them a call before attacking it with the tools aggressively.

Has a bit on the 30 which is apparently the same. Shows interior.

Thanks all. Pekeri sent me a PM with excellent details on the service agents in Sydney.
I saw that article thanks Ramona. He says changing the belt is easy, the motor just pulls out. I have tried to lift it out but am unwilling to apply too much force. It doesn't look like it just lifts out.
I have the spare belt and grounding strap so if I can figure it out it should be straightforward.
Agree Cisco. The belt has had some loads on it on the Lord Howe passages and is at least at the stretch limit in the specs, maybe a bit more, so I am confident that is the source of the noise. The pilot still works fine.

Thank you gents.

After studying the diagrams I figured that the motor had to lift although I hadn't been able to budge it by hand. I slipped a screwdriver under it and gently put pressure on. It started to move and soon I had it up, slipped the old belt out with some difficulty and then the new belt in with even more difficulty.

I put it all back together and wandered outside to put it in the car and the service guy in NZ (thank you Pekeri for the contact) rang me so I told him what I had done and he confirmed that is how it is done.

The new belt is much tighter than the old so here's hoping it improves the noise and drive.

Very useful advice and a good outcome. BZ to all.
