Hi All

Someone has gone through the Red Witch yachts at Nedlands Yacht Club sometime between 9th - 14th March.

They stole a tiller extension off one boat, and tried to take fittings of another.

Meanwhile, they stole the following from my boat:

No. 1 Genoa - Marked with name of boat 'Summer Soul' and with sail number N257
White spinnaker in bag with homemade frame to hang off the front of the boat, along with the spinnaker sheets.
Two lifejackets both marked with boat registration - DN572

If anyone sees these items being offered for sale, please let me know.

My suspicion, however, is that this person is putting their own Red Witch together as they were very specific in what they wanted.
They took the No. 1 Genoa, but not the No. 2 that was sitting in an identical bag next to it. If you're taking a spinnaker, you wouldn't think to take the spinnaker sheets unless you knew what you were doing.

Therefore, if the culprit is a sailor, you have broken the ocean code and may Poseidon bring misfortune upon you and your vessel.

Sad to hear Dave...

Probably one of these crazy squirrels going around and readying their boat to get away from the mainland...hopefully poseidon will smite them while out to sea and they drown when their toilet rolls become waterlogged....

They cant be too bright either as the obvious identification numbers will be very obvious once raised. Will keep an eye out...

Hi Dave,
I'm sorry to hear it, that really sucks.
Do you have any pictures of the spinnaker bag and frame? Might help jog the memory bank if it pops up anywhere.
A pox on the mongrels whoever they are, stealing from a mans boat is as low as it gets.

This sail will be in a Rolly Tasker sail bag

The spinnaker in bag... also the sheets which are 6mm white and yellow dyneema with bright yellow stoppers.

I bought the Quantum spinnaker second hand so it had sail numbers on it which I removed, but you can still the see the outline of 1418...

Empathy for you. 18 months ago this happened to me. File a report with the police. In my case the NSW Water Police caught the 3 perpetrators and I got some of my gear back.

Total Scumbags they are.

These sails aren't any use on any other yacht. Given the small number of Red Witch sailors around, if someone turns up with these sails it wont take long to find them...

Hopefully, that's why I'm posting pics... more eyes out there, more chance someone will see them.

Good News! The sailing coordinator at Nedlands Yacht Club got a tip off that a genoa with Summer Soul written on it had been seen at a race at Claremont Yacht Club. On further investigation all my equipment along with other items from other boats have been retrieved.

At least some sailors are looking out for each other.

Although there are continued reports that in these hard times that boats at South of Perth YC have been targeted as well - thieves were looking for life jackets, tools and electronics that they could sell on quickly. They were also cutting padlocks and bolts to gain access.

Maybe a warning to all that we should check our boats and take off some of the more valuable equipment even if they are locked up.

Hi Dave

How did your gear end up on the other boat

Did it's owner steal them or did he buy them from someone else unaware that they were stolen

Regards Don

These days there is no such thing as a "better" padlock, with the advent of of battery powered angle grinders even the supposedly best padlock stands no chance against a 1mm cutting disc.
As has always been the case locks only keep out the honest people.

Things in NSW are about to get less secure as 15000 so-called 'low risk' crims are being released from our jails, all the petty theives and break-and-enter artists will be out there looking to top up their Centrelink payments the only way they know...terrific!

Two young lads claim that they bought the boat with the stuff on it, but they bought the boat before my stuff went missing, so the dates don't match - investigations are ongoing...

Good to hear you got your gear back Dave. Watching the local news & speaking with some people, there's been a string of theft & damage to boats around that way recently. The perpetrator(s) is familiar with the area & know a bit about boats & what to steal. Kama has a way of eventually catching up with those sort of loathsome individuals.
