I have a prestigious neighbour on the hardstand at Bundaberg Port Marina, not good circumstances for him though, Two large storm cells with winds in excess of 120 kilometres an hour, tumultuous seas, and a knockdown saw the boat taking on water, flooding the engine and Jon sustaining injuries. The storm left Jon with unrepairable engine and no navigation equipment or electronics. A new engine has been purchased and new B&D electronics are on order.

I note the article mentions using a car tire as a drogue.
I know a tire can also be used as a fender, but is that really the sort of equipment to be carrying around the world? Would anyone seriously consider that a good alternative to a jordan series or one of the other drogues?
Obviously it worked for Jon and he has the experience to know what to do but I wouldn't think to have a tire on board.

Car tyres make good fenders and are regularly used by fishing vessels. Holes are drilled to take the attachment ropes and drains. When the time comes that a drogue is needed the tyre is an obvious choice. About a 50 profile smaller tyre with some chain to keep it from breaking clear would be a good drogue.

Car tyres have been used for years you can do some simple rope work to decorate the Tyre make it look more nautical , can be used as fender the rope stops black marks, I notice the Jordan drogue has been written about a lot over recent years on it being damaged when retrieved , you have to pay some one to get rid of tyres. So it's going to be very reliable out at sea .
