G'day all!
I am looking for advice on what sail boat would suit me & my family.
History:
I have been windsurfing for 10 years & have had 15'-20' (40hp-250hp) power boats for the last five years.
Ski biscuits & knee boards are heaps of fun, but powerboats seem to lack "soul".
I am looking to teach my 4yo son to sail, hoping to spend saturday arvos on the water with him. He has been on the water with me from six months old & loves/knows boats!
I have sailed surfcats here and there throughout my life, but feel they may be too "wet" for my son.
I am totally unfamiliar with types/size of sailing boats & am chasing recommendations from those in the know...
Looking for a boat about 15 foot with room for two of us, maybe my mate and his son at a push.
We are also looking to join the local Koombana Bay Sailing Club down the track. Is there a boat that would suit a racing class as we progress?
Your time, help and knowledge is greatly appreciated!
Seaton.

Hi
From the sounds of it your best option would be to get a catamaran, they may seem wet/fast but they are alot easier to teach some one on due to the higher stability then that of monohulls (there is nothing scarier for a 4 year old then tipping over). Koombana Bay Sailing Club also has got a very strong catamaran fleet compared to that of its skiff fleet. In my opinion the windrush 14 seems to fit perfectly in to every criteria;
+established fleet
+cheap
+versetile
+fast when you want to
and is very similar to what you've already sailed
Or another established fleet at the club are the Nacra 16 sq or though these boats are larger (17.5 feet) and abit harder to handle (larger sail area and less versitility).
You should come down to the club on a saturday when racings back on and have a chat to some of the guys from the cat fleet and check out some of the boats.

Best bet is Pelicans. 12 or so foot learning class. two person, to really learn the basics of sailing.
Generally the sailing is on Sundays tho. Normally the keel boats (bigger) race on saturdays and the smaller classes learn on Sunday.
Best bet is to speak to the yacht club to see what development they have.
