Hi everyone, I'm very new to this. I'm hoping someone could tell me how many miles it is from Yeppoon in Qld to Lakes Entrance in Victoria. And therefor how long would it take to sale a yacht that distance.

I'm looking at buying a Yacht at Yeppoon and I need to bring it to Tasmania, Tamar River.

Ted. Tasmania.

Hi Ted,

The approximate distances are as follows:-

Yepoon to Lakes Entrance 1150 miles
Yepoon to Devonport 1300 miles.

My first question would be :- Why would you want to sail to Lakes Entrance?

A horrible stretch from Gabo to Lakes Entrance, a possible non entry over the bar and once in there you have to get out.

Suggest from Gabo cross over to top of Flindrs Island (The Sisters) the day hop to Devonport.

As for how long will it take? How long is a piece of string? Too many variables.

Be careful with using a delivery skipper. They sank our yacht off Flinders Island three years ago with no recourse.

Lakes Entrance is supposed to be an all weather option now.
Or so i have been told.
Worth checking out details, don't take my word for it.
You will need to know cruising speed of vessel then divide distance
by that speed to work out how long.

Then double it and allow for the odd fortnight holed up because of weather.

I would respectfully suggest that it depends on your experience level. If experienced suggest about 6 months ie 4 months to get the boat ready and about 2 months to cruise down in appropriate weather windows. If you are just starting out with boat ownership then probably more than 12 months. ie 6 months to get the boat ready 4 months trialling your skills and 2 months for the cruise down. Sailing a yacht over any distance has very little correlation between actual speed of boat vs distance to be travelled. It is definately not something that can be rushed.

A man made ocean access at Lakes Entrance has provided safe passage to Bass Strait since it was opened in 1889 and has contributed significantly to the region's history.

no mention of it not thats from www.gippslandports.vic.gov.au/ports-and-waterways/ports-and-waterways/gippsland-lakes/ I have always wanted to sail across there.

have a look at the over head photo of the entrance on that site in the sand managment section on the left side of the page at bottom of the page.

this is an entrance where you would want to be right on the money in good weather .
bad weather .... well you work it out!
