We are planning a move to Qld. Having never sailed in Qld I'm wondering if it is worth moving my yacht this November to Yeppoon area and immediately placing it in a marina berth or just place it in a storage yard until the cyclone season is over. At the end of the cyclone season (March/April ?) then I'd move it to a marina berth.
My question is, for those of you who sail in the Qld area......
Is sailing Yeppoon - Mackay in the November to April period still good or is it rare that most people sail?
("Good" sailing for me by the way is less than 20 knots, seas less than 2m and temperatures more than 20 degrees C. My wife is susceptible to seasickness. The other factor is cost. It will be around $500 per month cheaper to store the boat on land than store it in a marina.)

Everybody still sails or goes boating in Queensland during the so called "cyclone season". Everybody (with half a brain or more) also has a cyclone plan. It may be that they sail south for the season or they work out where their bolt hole will be.

There are plenty of marinas along the Queensland coast, a few navigable rivers and a few harbours.

I would regard the marina at Rosslyn Bay, Yeppoon as a fairly safe place to have a vessel during a cyclone even if it passed right over the top of it. The configuration of the sea walls there does not allow a swell to bear onto the berths directly. However that marina is chocka block full and you may have trouble getting a berth there. Supply and Demand, the price is high as it is anywhere north of there.

During a cyclone I would much rather my yacht being in the water than on the hard. Less windage.

It all depends on how valuable your yacht is to you intrinsically (Do you talk to her and make love to her? Would you brave the Perfect Storm on and with her?) and how good an insurance policy you have.

Decision time! Fish or cut bait.

I guess Rosslyn Bay marina is good choice. Great and North Keppel Islands 9 miles away.
You too optimistic about dry storage. Marina is the only option, except very limit
amounts of small pens,
you placed in longer ones, you pay for it, regardless of the boat size.
