i,m not in perth , but depending on what type of fastener you need , your wa Co bunnings carry some SS over here .............

Cheers SandS, Im after 1/4" or M8 countersunk bolts bout 2" long with Nylocs..... Seems to be a hard thing to find in Bunnings etc.

Bunnings would be your best bet today
They have a range of "Dans 316 S/S screws ,nuts and bolts . I bought some 5/16 bolts and stainless nyloc that other day from a Chandler they were a bit of a disappointment 3 out of 4 worked the other bound up . I now have to cut the b88ger off and replace it.
Bunnings also carry the cheaper 304 s/s screws in larger quantities.
I have found Bolt shops are very reasonable , but even here in Vic theres not many open on Sundays some for the mornings

Id say your spot on here, Managed to find a chandler open today... but the quality of the bolts were crap! had a few bind up on me which now i have to cut them off.....grrr

The bolts were probably fine, stainless is very prone to galling unless you slather it in lube to prevent it. If the threads were cut rather than rolled then it is even more of a problem.

Both Mitre 10 shops close on Tuesday at 1700. Might want to check it out for SS fastenings Loosechange.

As in forever? .... I'm surprised they managed to keep it going this long .... that idiot has managed to stuff everything he touched.

When I was doing my apprenticeship , I was warned about thread galling by the boss as I was machining a 316 fitting on a lathe. The completion of the job required a thread on a large diameter of the work piece and I proceeded to cut the most beautiful looking thread. I had a counterpart fitting sample to which my job had to thread to. As I was testing the threaded fit to the sample it galled up and did exactly what the boss said it would do if I didn't do exactly what he instructed me to do. He just wanted me to apply this lube paste to the thread every time before I tried it. I ended up having to machine the test piece off, then machine a new thread on the job at a smaller od,,, and then machine a custom counter part to match my undersize thread. I very nearly wasted about $600 of 316 hollow bar.
Nuts and bolts are sometimes mixed in non specialty type shops,,,thread form for Wit 55 deg and UNC 60 deg ( 1/2"wit & 1/2"UNC different TPI) Whether the miss match causes more of a chance or lessens a chance of galling Im not sure, but I do know that a thread lube is a must for 316 on 316, be it oil, grease, tef-gel or spit

Supposedly a new shop is going to open but one of the workers said he reckons no and is looking for a job. They are selling 30 to 50 percent off so I shall have to see what antifouling paint is left there tomorrow!

It's a shame as its the only place that had a decent range of glues. Bunnings don't even have 24 hour araldite.

Talking to someone today that reckons he read in the local rag that they are NOT closing down but just ditching the Mitre 10 association. But that doesn't make much sense either as the the shop has now been devoid of decent stock levels for many months.
