I would assume due to the badly wind and wave exposed nature of it. If you look at aerial photos there are numerous boats moored out off the northern end of the point. The north west corner is a sandbar and there are no moorings. Go around more west and you are into Rushcutters Bay but those moorings out in the mouth of that bay on the western Darling Pt shore are still very exposed to stinking westerlies and souwesters. Ok there is a bit of shelter from Garden Island but those westerlies can howl - they got to 49kts yesterday and numerous clubs sensibly cancelled their races. Around the north east corner of Darling Pt there are not many moorings - the moorings start again around into Double Bay and are a lot more protected. I would be very concerned having a mooring off the northern end of Darling Pt. See the RMS mooring areas here - assume you have this. Hermit Bay out in the mouth of Rose Bay on the western Nielsen Park shore is brilliant in summer with wind from the east side of the compass but in a westerly of any strength is dire.

A bit further round the corner is Double Bay with currently a very short waiting list. There is a tender service from Double Bay Marina. $20 per trip or $150 a month for unlimited. I however keep a dinghy and motor at DBSC on the rack on the side of the club. The waiting list for the public rack is also 3-5 years. In joining DBSC you can make use of the small workshop and beer at $3 a can. They also run a big boat race (they are mainly laser dinghys) which is a very casual jaunt round the harbour for smaller yachts first Sunday of the month.

One of the partners in my Jeanneau 35 enjoys the Double Bay race. I sometimes crew with him. Quite a social event. Generally a glass of champagne before we start. Unfortunately for me I am now 'dry' for five months.

The advantage of the Darling Point mooring area is the CYCA supply a tender service generally 9am to 5pm, seven days a week.
I currently have a mooring in Lavender Bay which doesn't work well especially on race days.

Yes, its good to have a competitive fleet.
