I see that 130kph winds hit Lord Howe over the weekend.

I know that some of our forum members have visited the island in recent years by boat.

From those that have been there and moored (or anchored), how would you best take cover at Lord Howe when you know 24h in advance that such winds are going to hit?

I would think that most high winds have more like 7 days advance warning on your weather gribs. Lord Howe Island is 48 to 60 hours away from Sydney in my boat. Best take cover in a marina on the Australian East coast. Otherwise I would rather be at sea and dodging the eye of the storm than sitting in a sketchy anchorage.

Way to go if you have the kind of sea room there is around Lord Howe.

A different strategy may be applicable if you are located on the Queensland coast.

Several lines out to several mangrove trees have saved many a yacht over the years.

Apparently Port Hinchinbrook may not be the best refuge during a cyclone.

Boats are kicked out of the LHI lagoon in strong winds. If suitable they direct you to an anchorage off Neds Beach. Otherwise get sea room.
At 410nm from Pittwater, you have a really fast boat to do it in 48 hours. Especially as the current is going to be against you some of the way. I plan on 4-5 days cruising.

East coast current was 4.2 knots South during the week. That would seriously lengthen the trip!

It would be great to have a review of the insurance companies involved in the Port Hinchinbrook incident.

We rolled out 14 consecutive 200nm days in our crossing from Galapagos to Marquesas last year. Was set for a 6 day Tasman crossing from Opua to Eden last week, however when we turned South 4 days out we ran into the huge high pressure sitting in the middle of the Tasman. We were still tracking at over 6 knots through the water at max VMG downwind in about 10 Knots. The Easterly current??? had a NE set of 3 knots so our SOG hovered at 3 knots for a couple of days effectively adding 150nm to the trip. We had gone lightship for this crossing carrying only 150 litres tank water so to add injury to insult we couldn't take hot showers and were reliant on bottled drinking water for the last few days.

On the return voyage from LHI in 2010, 80NM East of Sydney, boat pointing north, slight following wind enough to keep goosewinged sails full, GPS shows COG to be south at SOG of 5 kts. Suspecting a problem with GPS got out the backup GPS and it showed the same. A third backup showed the same. I am going backwards at 5kts.
Never before experienced anything like the current that day.
