Bought our boat two years ago with a fully reconditioned Bukh DV10-LSME and original saildrive.
So the motor is effectively two years old and the saildrive 30 years old. The saildrive slips slightly when you turn the rudder full lock when motoring along as I think it amplifies the load on the prop. Now a whirring sound has developed which is worse than the old whirring sound.
I am just concerned how much life the saildrive has left in it. It sounds like the gears and bearings are worn.
If we want to keep the boat what is economically the best thing to do.
It would depend on where the problem is Keen the sail legs is a small item If this was the problem I could try and ask the guy that wants my sail drive if he would not mind if the leg didn't go he was more interested in the gear box but said he'd take the leg as well. If its slipping the cones in the gear box would need attention I don't have the sail drive manual and have not dismantled one so Im not much help I'm afraid .
The guy I bought my dv24 off found it better value to buy a new unit a Volvo as it was at a clearance price and his son worked near by so he got a good deal.]
He must have been going to rebuild the sail drive as he dismantled the leg and replace the seals it. According to Frant this is worn out . The previous owner told me the DV24 I purchased off him had done 3000 hours . To me the sail leg spins easily and has no back lash and appears to be in reasonable order.
At that stage I think he was told by his son he could get a good deal on the Volvo as they were clearing out old models.
I priced some stuff over seas and told the guy I had bought a dv24 with a sail drive with slipping gear box cones some time later I was contacted by some one else over seas at the other end of the world wanting to buy the sail drive ever after He was told the gear box cones were slipping .
I had tucked the dv 24 away for next winter and wanted no more to do with it till then . but after being contacted its wasted some of my valuable time which I don't have any to spare right now
But Id be looking at your gear box not you're leg all it has is a 90 degree bevel gear set up Id say and a couple of seals other than its run out of oil in the leg and the seals are leaking and or letting water in and damaged the bearings there would be not much else to go wrong in there
Perhaps if the bearings were seizing it could put more load on the cones in the gear box and make them slip Im not sure its a possibility but I dont have a drawing so I cant come to that conclusion
