Hello all,

I'm looking for a first boat. I've been looking at older boats like Top Hats which were recommended to me. How important is regular anti fouling? I'm happy to maintain as required but lots of boats I look at haven't been done in a while. I'm interested in this boat

https://www.boatsales.com.au/boats/details/1970-top-hat-25-mk-i/SSE-AD-6431989/

but she hasn't been antifouled since 2016. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Looks like a pretty decent top hat.
i would use the need for antifouling as a bargaining point. Not sure how the market is lately but 12k i would want a nice fresh bottom.
shouldnt really hurt it having been left so long but i would want it scraped off so you can check it out.

Bear,
First look at this site for extensive information on Top Hats.
www.tophatyachts.com

For your anti-fouling you have to apply three coats [with a roller] to meet the manufactures specification.
That means about 6 litres of anti-foul.
Now the tins come in 4 litre amounts and if you put on only one tin [2 coats] you will be back to do it all again in 12 months.
But if you put two tins on for 4 coats it will last just over three years and you will save the cost of two slippings and one tin of paint!

I have always used Altex No5 on my Top Hat Seaka.

That's a neat Top Hat, if you feel happy in her BUY IT!

Thanks mate, I belong to that forum as well. "Bear" is my username there though I have not posted there.
