I have an offer to buy a mooring in Morrison Bay from a yacht owner moving his boat to Lake Macquarie. According to RMS I have to buy the registered boat currently on that mooring for a transfer to be successful.
There is currently no waiting list for this area.
Is there a way around this so I can moor my yacht on this mooring.
Appreciate any help.

If they need you to buy the yacht, do so, transfer the mooring, sell the yacht back to the original owner and have the mooring assigned to your "new" yacht. Silly I know but sometimes you have to play the game to satisfy the bureaucrats. (surprising what you can buy and sell for ten bucks )

If there is no waiting list, wait until the current occupier moves his boat, and relinquishes his mooring licence, then you can put in an application for his spot. The mooring apparatus is what he is selling you, and if he relinquishes the licence he has to remove the apparatus anyway, so would probably want to give it to you.

Ah, buying the registered boat on the mooring does nothing toward getting the mooring licence, otherwise the crappyist boat in the best position would be worth a million, if no waiting list spend the couple a hundred to get on the list and get the first offer. Then buy the mooring tackle of the previous owner if it's any good

I had a Duncanson 26 in Morrisons Bay. It is a good location but a long way to anywhere you can sail (it is very sheltered and the wind is too variable that far up the river but the views and beautiful houses make it an interesting passage).
The RMS advice is correct but a couple of things need to be said to make it clear what you are buying and getting.
Where you will be allowed to put your boat will depend on its length, weight and draft. You might have to move the mooring you buy to a different spot.
You can buy the mooring apparatus from someone and as the previous owner needs to remove the mooring and you are the only buyer a good deal can be had. However it may be that the mooring apparatus has been there for 20 years and worn out, or it is designed for a 20ft boat and you have a 34 ft boat.

The BSO around Lane Cove River is probly the same one for you, it's only a couple of k's up river. If it is, his name is Rory - nice bloke and easy to talk to.

His mbl number is 0418 618 435. He gave it to me freely last time we had a chat, and it's no problem to ring him directly for a bit of advice about your needs.

The way I understand it if there is no waiting list the current license holder can write to RMS saying he no longer needs the mooring. He can sell the apparatus to you and RMS assign the site to you, pay some money and off you go. The BSO for the area is Nick

The system seems to have been changed recently - I was advised by RMS that I can now basically take over someone else's mooring. They seem to have tried hard to stamp that sort of thing out a while ago, so I assumed it was still impossible.

i think that is only the case if you are buying a boat at a place where there is no waiting list.
