A fellow boaty (stink) spoke to store holder at a Sydney market last weekend, he was selling electric motors (new) for $85 per unit (not sure what size but they were not small), had 6 left. As my little T/S would weight no more than 400 kgs wringing wet, how big should I be looking at to get me mobile at around 4 or 5 knots ?

How many Watts?
Big electric motor + trailer sailer and crew = high current and big batteries
I'm not dismissing, it sounds thirsty though.

Excellent point SirJman, you might not be dismissive so I am, STUPID IDEA.
Think ill just stick with the Merc 5hp.
$85 for a new motor, will ring the shop number he supplied and check the size anyway.
May be good for fishing or the tinny but as the primary, don't think so.

Not a stupid question. I was watching a motorised electric human size helicopter on youtube this morning, anything is possible. You just need enough motors and batteries in parallel

I've 3 gel batteries total (1xboat,2xcampervan) I could use the extra 70kgs ballast

At $85 each I would expect that you are going to get exactly what you paid for. Remember if it seems to good to be true (or even reasonable) then it probably is.

1st thought it would be to good to believe to mate,
when I was offered a Hood 23 for $50 the lights went on but after a good demoulding it was a cracker
and we did nothing but sail it.
Its good to have a win occasionally.

Point of difference being that the Hood wasn't built as a cheap piece of crap, whereas the $85 motor is a totally unknown quantity in terms of quality and expected longevity.
