Hi good people.

Has anyone recently anchored in the Tweed Heads area?
I'm hoping to meet some friends there - (they don't sail) and I am wondering if anyone can offer some advice on the best places please?

Cheers!

Hi mate,

best anchorage is to take the starboard arm around toward tweed itself, there's plenty of room once the main channel ends. There are also several public wharfs to tie up to for the prescribed time limit- no major issue if you exceed the time limit as long as no one is waiting.

there is also the marina at the Ivory tavern, they are, or were happy to let you stay for free if you are are having lunch or dinner......dinner may mean an overnight if you're a bit sneaky if you know what I mean.....

If you continue down the main tweed river, there is a shallow spot probably about 1.5-2kms after the breakwater, less than 1.8m at low tide, I know I've hit it 2 or 3 times, so 1/2 tide is the go, stick close to the rock wall, real close, the after the boat harbour for the boat ramp, you can anchor anywhere to the side of the channel. All well marked , and most cruising boats head a way down toward the freeway bridge and moor down there.

i only have an 8hp motor so I tend to leave on a run out, and come back in on a flood as the currents runs pretty strong.

cheers
Rick

And looking at the forecast, if you are not in the river by late Thursday- may be too late.

i or we have a general rule of thumb that if the forec swell is over 1.5m forget it.

I'm sure you have looked at the various charts and guides, so I will reinforce that you need to enter the river from a NE direction, and then stick fairly close to the northern wall on the way in.

if you turn to starboard into the terranora inlet-- the best place to anchor- and I have just taken this off the Isailor app- is around 28 degrees 11.210 mins and 153.32.717 if that makes sense.

im moored in the river and go in and out all the time

cheers

Thanks for the advice guys.
Yes I have the Alan Lucas book and have had a look online for information, but I was just after some first hand recent information on anchoring - or picking up a mooring. So anchoring near the Golf Club looks like the go.
We are leaving Ballina shortly and will hopefully arrive about 1600 hrs before the weather turns.
Cheers!

Bar is very quiet at present and should be even flatter when the tide turns - just saw a couple of tinnies come back in.

if that was you I saw just offshore quick trip you're a bit early!

Arrived at the entrance at 1500 and tried for about half an hour, couldn't get in.
The bar had waves breaking pretty much from all angles and the depth was way less then indicated on my charts.
We had our first bad "thumper" - riding over the crest of an incoming wave and thumping down the other side.
Continuing on to Broadwater...

That's great to have a "plan B" amazing the difference a few hours makes- I was watching till about lunch time and as I said above a couple of 14ft or so tinnies came back in from offshore fishing- one guy on his own! (Braver than me)

enjoy the Gold Coast but the weather is going to be real bad till Monday or so- if you decide you need a bolt hole head up the Coomera river to one of the big marinas - easy trip well marked, and either GCCM or the boatworks should have room, or once you are up in the river itself, there is good holding in mud to anchor .

cheers

On the forecast I would be booking into a marina for the weekend. With the big tides you don't want to end up dragging anchor onto a sand bank at the top of the tide in the dark. Southport Yacht Club would be OK With plenty of things to do round the area. Another couple of options are Sanctuary Cove marina, Couran Cove resort at Tipplers for something different or Mariners Cove beside Southpurt Yacht Club. Boat Work does not have many births so check first and the same goes for GCCM. My pick would be Sanctury Cove.
Stay safe
