CAN YOU HELP ME?

I will be sailing a national titles just after Christmas out of Manly (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Brisbane).

I am interested in anyone that might be able to help me with some local knowledge about the areas idiosycrasies, weather paterns ( eg. build up of cloud in the east, with a NE breeze means that the wind will usually ...), places not to go, currents, etc.

I would be grateful for any advice or insight.

Thanks.

what boat do you sail ?

Ive done 2 nationals there in cherubs
Conditions ranged from drifters to 30knots.

The water can get a bit lumpy in a big breeze so watch out for nosedives.

I found boats with a stiffer mast / deeper sails had more power to get through the chop and would dominate upbreeze. My 2 cents is to power up your rig a bit more than normal (assuming your use to sailing on flat water)

Hi Vance,

Thanks for the reply.

I sail a heron. Slow, fat, little bath tub. Easy enough to power up the rig in chop. Thanks for the advice. I usually sail on a lake, but have spent time down at Botany Bay and out on Middle Harbour. I epect the conditions to be a bit like Botany Bay.

Cheers.

herron and morton bay dont mix:P
i used to race a manley jr ( a big sabot with jib and spiniker) solo around the bay for 2 seasons and pray for LOTS of wind or barely any , the frequency of the waves makes this size boat susceptible to the upwind bash a punishing mission but using the up into the wave and away down it will make all the difference (we actually got 2 boats nearly exactly the same one using that tactic one not and over 1nm was somthing like 9mins or so)

wind is the problem it can really go anyway as the day progresses but generally in summer its a n/e and 9 out of 10 times will freshen in the arvo so if ur going from manley to bribie is. throw your big sails on your gonna be reaching :D in saying that definatly play it by day

westly hug the coast (have a quick look at a chart though coast has alot of reefs) because of the cliffs u often get a bit of extra drive in closer

but id say your going to be racing around the manley area maybe running to mud is. where current will play a big part so again glance a chart and decide your general course to use the tide for or against you

not much but i hope it helps

i havent "sailied" there however from kitsurfing there i have noticed a few things,
the NE seabreeze picks up quickly and can be very gusty but still fun, large swell/current moving in a North-south direction.
have fun!
