Hey all...further to my intro post, I'm fitting out my 38' pacific for extended crusing (north then east) and in need of a windvane, watermaker and wind genny so if anyone's got such items collecting dust then please let me know!

Hello westwindstorm, have a good think about putting a wind generator on your boat. I am a live aboard and have a 300w wind generator. I wish I had put more solar panels on the boat and not worried about the wind generator. It all sounds good getting 300w at 25 knts but who stays out in that weather for long and when you anchor up you're trying to find some place protected. And by the way 25 knts means the minimum amount of breeze not just gusting around that mark. So when your enjoying your sundowners it would need to be in a 35 knt breeze to ensure you get nothing below 25.
Now I'm currently anchored at the reef about 30 mile off shore with a nice steady 10-15 blowing and my average boat draw is 5a/h but I still need to run the motor to keep the batteries topped up. I have 120w of solar panel but they are fixed in position and with the sun currently in the northern hemisphere I'm only getting about 50% output.
You can fit out your boat how you would like to, but if I had my time again I'd probably look at more solar panels on adjustable brackets. If you decide to go down this track keep in mind that solar panels hate shade. This includes the back stay wire, danbouy pole, VHF aerial, anything at all. Not sure how the back pocket is fairing but to get the most out of your solar panels each one needs to have is own regulator. This probably sounds extravagant but you want to ensure you get everything you can get from the system. There are other methods which other yachties swear by as well, so search the forum for more info

Yeah when I had MY boat, that was the advice I got from ALL cruising sailors that I spoke to. If it's blowing twenty knots, it'll put in significant amps, below that, almost nothing. The only time it's useful is at night when the solar isn't contributing, and that's usually the time you want to be anchored for the night and really DON'T want to be in strong wind. Made sense to me....
