Turns out that I have a water tank that had been dissused for some time. How would you go about cleaning it? Chuck in a bottle of chlorine bleach?

My integral fibreglass tank was looking a little dubious through the inspection hatch.

I tried sourcing Puritabs or Aquatabs in vain.

Ended up completely emptying the tank. Poured 8 litres of white vinegar in. Let it sit for 24 hours. Filled the tank with water. Emptied it again. Refilled with water.

Seems okay now.

Was thinking of that, I usually use white vinegar with baking soda to get rid of (kill) black mould when it pops up. I might apply some, but being 127 litres in volume, I cannot just fill it with vinegar unfortunately. And, there is no way to access the tank but through the 38mm inlet and 16mm outlet unfortunately. So scrubbing the inside is not an option.

Load it up with baby bottle steriliser ( Milton - or similar)
We flush it through aour system every 6 months

Sodium Metabisulfite or Camden tablets available from a home brew shop will sterilise your tank.
Short of being able to get access to the tank and physically cleaning and flushing there is no really effective way of ridding your tank of gunk.

My tank is stainless steel 40 litres. I've just put in one fluid ounce of Star Brite water conditioner from Whitworths, so I'll have to see
if it works OK. I suspected the water was getting a bit foul. Missus and I take bottled water to drink but use the tank water for everything
else. I'll check the tank next trip to the boat.
Selkie...Whitworths catalogue says they stock Aquatabs. I don't know if you tried there.

I use Acquasafe, which is a product sold for rainwater tanks. It works very well. Also if you are drinking the water, fit a charcoal filter and always make sure to run h the hose and marina pipes out for a good long time before you fill, so you don't get water that has been sitting in a warm pipe or hose for hours or days.

This issue is still plaguing me. My stainless tank idea didn't work out, the flexible plastimo tank is a pain so I am thinking of going back to the chunky Diablo solid plastic tanks. The lid is huge so they are easy to clean and the level gauge screws in without any cutting.

I I still can't find a charcoal filter for a manual galley pump though.

I use one of the cheap Whitworths cartridge filters. It is mounted in a DIY housing I made from PVC pipe fittings, which sits on the bottom of the tank, on the end of the suction hose.
