I figure carbon monoxide or similar. Wouldn't the whales be down south this time of year.

fast boats need air bags !!

Yep
I agree SandS . What we need is more regulations.
NOT!!

MB, from the latest photos of the damage it looks like they hit something harder than a whale.

not regulations just air bags ............... if that boat had air bags in the dash board two family's may still have fathers and sons ......instead their heads must have ended up embedded in the dash

maybe stink boat designers should put AB in instead of a zillion disco lights and and other useless electrical items like 4000 watt quadrofonic boom box crap .....

Didn't see the photos. Even then, to be killed by impact I would think needs a good deceleration and, as there isn't a great deal of draft, you would expect the boat to go over a floating bit of debris.

So perhaps the whale theory works, a couple of years ago here a fishing runabout was unlucky enough to run smack into a breaching whale

When I first wrote "Whales" I was thinking of the Essex.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex(whaleship)

But the later news showed details of the damage and it looks too ragged.
So I have no guesses as to what they hit, but whatever it was, it was hard.

I don't think air bags would work on a power boat. Come off the first big wave with a jarring crash and the bag would be in your face. Not a good idea.

Currently not far from the area and heard warnings on vhf about a floating tree in this neck of the woods, but could have been anything I guess. They say it's pretty hazy from the fires around there too. Sad news.

Wow, I was in that area, sailing from Percy to Pearl Bay on the Saturday. It was quite hazy from the fires, but flat calm. I did see a large log floating between Pearl and Port Clinton.
