Trustee from the Toolroom is one of my favourite Neville Shute novels. Along with Requiem for a Wren, The Far Country and Pastoral.

ISailor, because it can input all the boat telemetry/AIS and output course data to the boat. I liked it a lot more than Navionics.
And also because I'm lazy and haven't bothered testing all the other apps available :)

One problem I have found with iNavX is the AIS wifi interface (TCP/IP connections) does not work with the android version, only works with ios (ie iphone / ipad). Unfortunately this information is buried in their android manual, their advertising about AIS wifi interface does not mention this limitation.

I recently installed an Axiom to merge much of my on board and weather data - and with the RayControl app I get it all on my iPad - including control of autohelm, boat power, music, etc. - pretty cool stuff that even tells you when to tack given tidal, wind shift and forecast data. It also gives you these theoretical polar benchmarks - mesmerising really. On the downside I recently noticed that I was spending so much time focused on the screen and the numbers that I was missing being in the moment.

Hi Concepcion, I have the Axiom too and I can mirror Navionics to an Ipad/Iphone as you mention. But I don't believe you're able to control the helm that way. Can you check that for me as I may need an upgrade or something? I suspect not, as I'd always assumed this was a safety issue. In addition, they'd undermine the $400 odd gizmo Raymarine sells for this purpose...

So for me, Navionics at the helm, iSailor on the iPad - GPS model (predominately for an anchor watch, but good as a redundant backup), Open Cpn on the laptop with a puck for GPS positioning (early days with this, but another backup that has up to date Aus Hydro charts so I can compare to Navionics in areas I don't know), Aus winds app for realtime Automatic Weather Station feeds (I refer to this all the time, it's a useful tool to have down here), Windy app along with BOM site for general weather planning in 3g/4g range only.

Yeah 2bish it is something (controlling autohelm) that was I think recently introduced and only possible on a tablet - eg ipad - not mobile phone. You may need to update software to lighthouse 3 & you may need to have all Raymarine stuff, but the RayControl app lets you control everything remotely. The autohelm control isn't that obvious though - appears as a pop up menu via a helm icon - in all display options as far as I can tell. You also need to first disengage the autohelm via the app and then re-engage following either a course or using a wind vane. Once operational you can do all you can via the app that you can via the main axiom controller. It has a slight lag, but is super convenient. I mostly do solo and have all controls in my cockpit between my helm/traveller and dodger - has made sailing much safer for me & the data details are incredible - as mentioned polar angles linked to real telemetry. Those axiom things can however get very expensive and what I've done is go for the smallest cheapest version axiom 7+ (no sonar) and use my largish iPad Pro. Really happy with it all.
