Hi Sailors.

Obviously with buying your first yacht there can be a few unknowns.

Just after a general guideline for yearly maintenance costs for a 34-40 ft yacht.

Of course I realise this could be an open ended question
but assuming the rigs good, sails good hulls good. What are you guys spending a year in up keep.

PS. The wife is on board with yacht purchase but wants to know how much it will cost us. Hahaha as if she'll ever find out BOAT

General expenditure for an S&S34 to keep it seaworthy, after it has been made seaworthy, about $5-6,000 a year. Insurance, mooring, a slipping every 18 months, general maintenance etc. Plus a big spend of about $10,000 every 10-15 years for sails and rig etc.

The 5-6000 can also vary greatly.
What area you are in effects a lot also weather you are going to do work yourself or pay someone.

Yes MB's $5 to $6K each year would cover our Jarkan 10.5.

We also pay for Yacht Club membership. The club has a tender service which makes access so easy.

While we waited (for 2 years) to get an RMS mooring @ Bayview we hired a mooring from the club. This meant that for the first two years we were up for an additional $3 k to cover mooring hire.

We have had an antifoul every 12 moths @ $1.8 k, Insurance say $1.2 k and then there is the RMS mooring @ $725. Our insurance company insists that we send photos of the mooring apparatus each year. So we pay $308 to have it lifted and serviced.

Our Jarkan was built in 1987 and we (the 4th owner) have owned for nearly 5 years.

The previous owner fitted a BBQ @ $800, at cabin heater @ $3,500, a holding tank @ $3,300, rigging (incl furler) @ $8,300 and repaired the Eutectic Fridge @ $2,300 (incl compressor). He also upgraded all instruments in 2008.

We have replaced the batteries twice ($450 each time) and installed new alternator ($470) and new solar panes incl controller ($500).

We have replaced the anchor chain and both water bladders.

Looking at the current add for that cheap Jarkan (at around $30k) the new owner would need to spend $50K to bring her close to the fittout/spec of ours. So buying cheap doesn't always relate to good value. In fact the Jarkan at $68k is actually better value (in my view).

Before buying we looked @ an S & S Defiance (moored Gosford) a couple of Mottel 33 (Greenwich and Nth Qld) and a Beautiful Beneteau 34 (Lake Maq). The Beneteau require a new motor and had osmosis so disappointingly we moved on. The Mottel from QLD (Pinnacal) is now moored near us and looks great. The owner needed to drop the price as it was over priced.

We used ours for about 50 days last years and it's been as far south as Jarvis Bay and North to Newcastle. At Easter it was meant to be at Port Stephens but unfortunately work ruined that trip. Maybe next year!!!!

Stone, hope this helps.

The size in this case is going to be the killer. Your looking at the expensive end for slipping and mooring fees. Living in WA is not cheap either. It will also depend on if your metropolitan or country. 34 foot and up the costs can climb rapidly

I my case with a Currawong 30, living in the country NSW and a pensioner, [mooring and rego fees are 50%] i do all the work. 3rd party insurance $180. Rego and mooring is somewhere under $400. Slips are expensive at about $600 and one 4 litre tin of antifoul every 12 months or so. I do my own mooring maintenance so new shackles and swivel every 18 months probably costs $50.

Stone,

great at choice of boat, I have owned a Cavalier 37 for around 6 years. For my purposes they are a great boat. We generally sail with two on the boat, using it for day sails up to a couple of weeks away. We also have regular family days with a handful of adults and a couple of kids, room for all in the cockpit.

You will see a great range of maintenance costs, very dependent on the standards you want to keep the boat at and how much work you do yourself.

My maintenance costs are typically. Insurance $1200, mooring rent and inspection around $1,000, antifoul and polish $3,300 ( I hate this job so pay for it to be done), yearly engine service $600. (we take the boat to sea so I like some one that knows more about these things to look at the engine yearly), minor fix ups repairs allow around $2,000 per year.

Note that this is maintenance costs, you need to have a good look at the boat and think about any upgrades you may want, they are additional to the above. Over the first couple of years of ownership I was spending way more than the above costs, replacing may of the systems to get her to the condition we wanted.

Good of luck with the boat, drop a note if you need anything more specific about the Cavalier.

Expensive!! My costs are 165 mooring maintenance. 300 mooring. 120 rego. Antifoul 700 inc paint (every 18 months)Anything extra isnt hugely needed however ive only been using my boat in harbour. Things are changing now shes getting ready for extended cruising.
Im blown away by what people pay though. My boat whuch i paid 5k for was on someones mooring before i owned her. The rushcutters bay dude who didnt own the boat but leased his precious mooring out wanted 4500 dollars for all the expenses he incurred while it was on his mooring for 18 months. Ridiculous. All his costs were trifold what i pay.

as per Ramona' s post there is a big difference in cost as boats get bigger.

Steve's boat is a 25 foot top hat. You may be able to anti foul the top hat for $700, but the Cavalier will use two tins of paint, so $700 will hardly cover the paint costs. You need to add costs for the lift, yard daily charges, environmental levy etc........I cannot remember the exact cost build up of my last anti foul, but I did look at doing it my self and would have struggled to keep costs under around $2,000.

Yes true. Smaller boat is cheaper to have and thats why i have it because i can kinda afford it. The mooring people i mentioned paid 1800 for antifouling but all they had to do was call someone who towed the boat somewhere. Its amazing the price differences even 20 min boat ride up the harbour. They paid 330 per year mooring maintenance at rushcutters. I pay 165 at woodford bay/Greenwich which isnt far away.

I also have a budget of 5 k . It depends on how much you want to do yourself . I used to sail from cammeray to Botany Bay for the annual slip and anti foul ( cheaper there and you can work on the boat yourself) nice sail as well . There is always something that takes you by surprise , I've had no osmossis for years , last time she was out there was a spot or two , so this time out with the grinder and a longer slip time . My boat is 32 ft also about 35 years old .

It is like the guy who walked into a Rolls Royce showroom and asked the other guy what the fuel economy of a Rolls was.

The other guy said "If you have to ask that question, you can't afford to buy it."

Yacht maintenance costs what it costs, is unavoidable and is largely dependant on your location and how cunning you are.
