thought id start a new thread for a new topic..

current bottom paint is hempel and to my surprise it lasted really well 15 months with no barnicles and only a slim film. so I went a bought some more from bias boating. when I got home I noticed that it had an expiry date of November last year!

stupid thing is I know to check the expiry before buying I just forgot until I got home.

so is expired paint a bad idea?

It would be if you paid full retail markup for it.
As for is it good enough to put on your boat, I would ring head office and not the place you bought it from and get the low down from someone who has more your interests at heart.

I called hempel and this was their reply via email.

This mail to confirm OLYMPIC 86951 antifouling at present remains effective after the use by date of November 2013.
As discussed, if mechanical stirring does not produce a fully liquefied paint, then this would be called into question.

I called bias and said if I open it and find that the paint wont liquidfy will you replace it. he said in 45 years he has never seen an expiry on anti foul and has never had this question before and was a bit curve balled how to respond. he said he will speak to the manger and get back to me.

By law you are entitled to a refund regardless of whether the product still "looks" good or stirs up satisfactorily. If the manager happens to get back to you have two options 1. big discount or 2. replace the product.
