My boats got a foam matress home made job. quite hard and really thick. Im not a fan of it and love futon 3/4matresses.
Because the foam matress is quite hard you roll around alot.
I thought to use a futon as you kind of sink into them. Might be more comfy. Only negative thing about the futon is theyre quite heavy. Would that matter?

i like futons too but they need to be kept dry and regularly aired. on a boat i think you would have a mould farm in no time.

Rockdale mattress factory offer a good range of styles, custom made to your pattern at a reasonable cost.
Might be worth looking into.

I have a fitted inner spring in the V berth & a double in the Aft berth - they came with the boat. So nice when you drop anchor dog tired....
I reckon it's worth paying whatever it takes to ensure you get a comfortable rest.

Allan

Sleep in a hammock in the cockpit in high summer. Love it!

My back was so sore I couldn't walk upright for nearly half an hour after getting out of hammock.

I have this system on my boat and it has made a 30tr old foam matress feel like an inner-spring job!
There is a shop in Melb that sells all their products so I am guessing that there will be an agent in NSW.
I also love their composting toilet, but it is a bit too dear for my budget at the moment, if I was a permanent live-aboard it would definately be on the shopping list.

I just put a double sized foam mattress about 8 inches thick on top of the original thin v berth mattresses. Thought I'd have to cut it to fit but it is fine... folds up the sides of the wall at the thin end but very comfy and cosy compared to before.

Hammocks are choice. We also throw a single spring mattress on the floor underneath the hammock. Sleeping two in the one spot

We have a foam mattress in the v birth but you tend to sink to fat into it.
