For true life sailing adventures of an Australian who was there in the hey day of the tall full rigged ships plying the grain trade between Port Lincoln in South Australia and England, scour the secondhand book shops for books written by Alan Villiers.

His book titles were:- The Set of the Sails, Cruise of the Conrad, By Way of Cape Horn and The Quest of the Schooner Argus.

A Welshman who is a great sailing author is Tristan Jones.

Well written books are the switch that turn on the video in the mind.

I have "The Long Way" by Bernard Motissier which is about his participation in that initial round the world race. It that the same book with a different title?

Another book I read about the same race was "The Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst" who was the guy who tried to fake the race in a Piver Victress tri-maran. The book was a reconstruction of the voyage based on his log books found on his abandoned vessel.

It was an interesting read but thoroughly depressing. Leave that one on the shelf if you see it.

I really enjoyed reading the Captain Hornblower series of books. Did you guys see the "Hornblower" TV series. I couldn't get enough of it. They reckon the actors enjoyed it so much that they would continue wearing their costumes all day after filming had finished. Ahhhh. Adventure and romance, what a great combination.

Oh well, the one of his books I did read about being iced in for a winter in the Arctic Sea was a good read anyway.

Here's one: www.clevelandmemory.org/ebooks/tinkerbelle/

It's the complete book telling the story of how he sailed across the Atlantic from the US to England in a 13' trailer sailer. An amazing achievement.

I have owned 18 and 22' trailer sailers for many years and wouldn't have considered either one as seaworthy (esp. not the 18) and yet this guy proves otherwise. As mentioned in another thread hereabouts, the spectacular achievement was however preceded with unspectacular careful preparation.
