Don, that view looks good. Is it from your house? Looks like it is facing North. Suburb? As far as I can tell in Hobart it is hard to find places that face the water and also face North.

The Huon Valley is a nice place to live and is a great place to sail

It gets a bit cool for a couple of months over winter but for the rest of the year it is normally low to mid twenties

The scenery is great, the property prices are cheap compared to the mainland and the locals are friendly

I grew up in Cairns and lived there for about 35 years before we travelled around Australia (working) in our caravan for 10 years and then settled in Tassie

It can get cold but i prefer the cold over heat and humidity and you can always put more clothes on but there is a limit to what you can take off

The funny thing about living down here is it might be 15 degrees here but as long as the wind isn't blowing and you are getting wind chill it is shorts and t shirt weather whereas if it was 15 degrees in Cairns I would be freezing

Sometimes in summer you can get cold days or hot (Tassie hot which is around 32 degrees) days but they only last for a couple of days normally before returning to a comfortable mid 20's

I miss swimming in the creeks and rivers in Cairns but there are some beautiful beaches down here and lots of nice summer days to swim without the risk of being stung by a stinger

I am at Cradle Mountain at the moment and it is supposed to be minus 4 in the morning but sights like this (taken yesterday afterrnoon ) make it worthwhile putting a coat on

For sailing people like us there are a few considerations to account for where one lives.

The main ones are I guess, climate, real estate affordability and sailing grounds, each of which may vary in priority.

I lived in Auckland for a couple of years and for a sailor it is fantastic. It is like living in Sydney with the Whitsunday Islands just outside the heads. The islands just out from Auckland are easy to reach and just beautiful and Auckland Harbour is easily as good as Sydney Harbour.

In Bundaberg where I live the real estate is way too cheap for my liking especially as I would like to sell my house. Climate wise, we get 6 weeks of hot, 6 weeks of cold and the rest of the year is just perfect. Despite occasional flooding it has the best river in Queensland.

Sailing wise we have an all weather entry port. From the port exit it is a full day sail to anywhere protected though. To the south Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Straits, to the north Lady Musgrave Island and the start of the Great Barrier Reef.

For me that is all great and I can live with it easily.

By the way, tomorrow is my 65 th birthday. We are going to have a party on Second Wind with about 8 people. Cheers.

That is our front yard

We live on a corner and the sealed section between the house and the grass is our front driveway that goes from the highway in front of us to the street beside us

On the other side of the highway is the river bank (crown land on not big enough to build anything on) and built over the water is the dinghy shed that I keep my dinghy in
