hi guys,
i was thinking of taking my small 4m tinnie style boat (smartwave) to tangalooma/big sandhills on monday. the forecast is for strong south easters. I dont mind a long drive but i do not want to be out in the middle of moreton bay in a 25knot south easter.

So my question is: if i left from cleveland, what is the stretch from straddie to cleveland like in a blow from the southeast. cleveland point is hellish in a northerly but im not sure about the southeaster. once i get to the lee of straddie and moreton i will be fine. Also crossing the gap between moreton and straddie (rous and rainbow stretch) does that chop up pretty badly?

I am a safe boater and i know moreton bay chop is nasty just after an idea of whether you guys think it would be ok between cleveland and straddie and then the stretch between moreton and straddie.

Yes this stretch of water will get seriously choppy. Tide will influence just how bad. Incoming tide in SE and standby to get wet My advice is wait for a calmer day or invest in buckets. Lots of them.

how about rainbow channel area. if i left from further south i could avoid Cleveland to straddie. But yes fiesta i take your advice on board chances are i will give it a miss monday unless there is a more comfortable way to do it.

Only sailed into Moreton Bay once, in A Swarbrick S111, a 36 ft heavy yacht. It was blowing 20-25 from the south, might have been southeast, and it was bloody horrible. We went down the east channel but over the shallows it was very choppy and very steep. Down south, we went into Manly, the wind had dropped but it can be choppy especially in the shallows.
4m tinny, I wouldn't venture out in more than 10 knots of breeze.
Make sure you have life jackets.

Mate I've grown up on the Bay and fished/dived her my whole life and I could honestly say that there is NO way I'd be going to Tango on that forecast in anything other than a sail boat. The bay chops up with that nasty short chop that just knocks your guts out. You may survive it, but it would be MASSIVELY unpleasant. No matter WHERE you launch from. I have a new 5.2m plate ally boat that I'm dying to take out for a run, and even I'VE written this next week off. Sorry.

Hi Jake,

I've sailed the Bay a lot and agree with drpete , it would be an " adventure " to coast hop to Tangers. Possible , but only for heros.

Moreton bay chop.....
Been on it since I was five.
It's not really a bay.....more like a 2 meter deep large mud flat. (lower than green)

Do what you want in good weather before midday. At lunchtime it starts it's daily thing.

Spank around the bottom of peel , up the inside of straddle ( I've seen massive whales go past me at dunwich) , cross to Moreton. Easy.

Go back in the morning as well.

On a flat day go straight from Manly to the Sandhills.

Go in winter. Summer is too windy.
