The easiest is just to take pictures with the volume buttons facing downward, which sidesteps the problem entirely but is still plenty annoying. Another option is to use a third-party app likeCamera+ that also records orientation so you don't have to worry about the EXIF metadata.

Once a pic is downloaded onto a computer the best little utility for manipulating pics is Irfan Viewer.

Now I've looked everywhere but dammit, none of my Nikons have a volume button so I thought maybe the Fujifilm cameras might have the answer, but alas, no volume buttons on any of those either.
I guess without a volume button I can't take any more piccies. Dammit!
