Hi All.
I don't post here much, but read a lot.
I was out with a mate yesterday on his boat at Croudace Bay, an Adams 13 (I think), with a new main and No.2, that were only a couple of months old and only been used a hand full of times. They were locally made in Sydney. $15k from memory.
Winds were light, and we just had the main up waiting for the start of the race. We had just jibed, when, BANG! The tack on the main tore right out!!!
It was the eye type. We were all pretty disgusted that this would happen to a new, locally made sail. We, being a bunch of amateurs but some very experienced sailors amongst us, all though that the bolt rope should have continued around the eyelet and along the foot. For at least a little bit anyway. However it didn't.
He was ropable.
He managed to use the cunningham on the first reefing eye so we could still race. We were even third over the line.

Don't normally ever see the bolt rope go around the eye and on to the foot, they are usually very well reinforced in that area.

Without seeing pictures, I am guessing that something on the mast, such as a winch, has come in contact with the sail near the foot when it has gybed.

At $15k, I assume they were not Dacron?

No. Not Dacron. A laminated material.
Nothing touched on at all. It was a few seconds after the gybe.
Just poorly reinforced I am guessing.

It's not a light racing sail either. You can just see the leeward tell-tale when the sun is behind the sail.

True.
But having to take it all the way back to Sydney is a pain.
Should never have happened to a quality local made sail.

Re reading this you don't mention has the owner even contacted the loft?
Would think that would be the first call before coming online having a bitch but not actually giving the whole story.
