Hi all,

An old looker / new poster.... I'm relatively new to sailing, have done a couple of seasons with CYCA as a crew and looking for a first yacht for myself and wife to learn sailing and cruise around...

First I was looking into trailer-sailers, but given that I live almost in Sydney city and have nowhere to park one, and problems putting it into the water and back, I now think that moored keel yacht would be a better option and give me much more time on water after all. So now my plan was to buy a small Top Hat and moor it somewhere in the Harbour. I know some Sydney members got their Top Hats recently and dried out market a bit :) , but there is still one nice looking one for sale in Pittwater that I'm going to inspect tomorrow.

However today I spotted this yacht

http://www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/private/used/SSE-AD-997452/1982-STARFIRE-32-YACHT

Looks like a lot of a yacht for a money, and kinda still in my budget (10-20k) but I was unable to find any information at all about this design... So if anyonce can share an opinion on how suitable this would be to learn sailing and cruise around Sydney with possible longer trips couple times a year it would be very appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
Serge

Looks like this was a one off. See www.rlyachts.net/forum.asp?ID=3010
One off, swing keel boats can be problematic. If it is a heavy swing keel, so much more so. Maybe OK for enclosed waters, but IMHO not a beginner' s boat.
Go the Top Hat. Solid boat, plenty of support from other owners, and good forum.

Thanks Yara! I'll stick to my original plan then, and try to find a nice Top Hat

Cheers
