Does anyone have any evidence of the effectiveness or otherwise of the use of Ultrasonic transducers to impede marine growth? Have there been any studies done that are supported by reliable scientific data. I see there are "kits" or built devices available through a well known electronics retailer.
You are better off to spend your $$$ on beer. In aluminiun cans.

Local bloke bought the UK version for 50% of the Australian price. Was a little disturbed by the plastic off the shelf plumbing parts in it, he is a plumber. I can't get a review from him of its effectiveness which really answers the question.

I have decided to find out for myself and have purchased a unit from Jaycar. I have been thinking about it for years and the original prices were about $4,000 so it was easier to make a decision on the $900 version from Jaycar. I will still be antifouling my boat about every 12 months but if I can reduce the amount of growth then it will be money well spent. I have only fitted the unit about 3 weeks ago (2 weeks after it was antifouled and put in the water) so I can't comment on performance.
Another company I had looked at for a unit was TMQ. Local word on the East Coast is that these guys make units suited for Aussie conditions. I had intended getting a unit from TMQ but after much waiting for their supplier to organise an inspection of my boat and was unable to get any idea of a price after phone calls and a few emails I gave up.
My boat is 12.2m mono and has a steel hull. The unit Jaycar recommends has 2 transducers on the hull. As the unit relies on the vibration to be transmitted thought the hull the results on my trial would only be good for other steel hull boats. I would imagine steel would be a better transmitter of the vibration than fibreglass or timber. I'll let you know in a year how I get on.
