will a step 1cm thick on rudder affect it much?

I want to add a step that i bought but the stern isnt really the right shape on the bluebird plus i dont really want to drill holes in the boat.
The step is a small fold out step made.of.nice stainless steel.
ive got a massive rudder and would like to attach to the rudder below the water line. I'm just wondering if it would change the handling much. Its pretty aerodynamic and im gonna try it anyway...

Steve, The standard rudder is made of plywood, and can be prone to rot. You would need some solid through-bolts and washers, and you should check how sound the timber is between the pintles. The step itself will cause extra drag, and maybe make a bit of a side load on the tiller,

Thanks yarra. I think i might wait til i get her on the hard before putting this on...use a rope step in the meantime...
