I’m a 66yo 75kg, surfing since 1970 and started doing paddel surf ocassionally some years ago.
Now I’ve more time available, and i’m getting more into paddel surf when waves are smaller, up to 5 feet. My surfing place is beach breaks with mushy to vertical days and I do surf/paddle surf mostly in spring and summer.

Now I’ve a 2013 8.6 allwave 30” wide and 130ltr and find it quite unstable on choppy or windy conditions and not very agile in surfing. IMO it’s all due to boxy rails. So I’m looking for a new board

My holy grail is the 2023 Fanatic allwave 8.7 31” and 135lts. Most volume in the middle for stability, an inch wider and much finer rails for more radical turning. BTW 2023 was the last year for Allwaves boards after Fanatic went Duotone.

Anyone experience in that board? last new boards are on offer now and i need a quick decision.
Any alternatives for my characteristics, long surfing experience, a few years on my body and intermediate paddle level

It’s interesting how the same brand and similiar dimensions of board can ride quite differently right!

if you’re buying new, the smik hipsters and and Sunova ghosts etc are both other very good choices

I agree with thegreatsup. If you are looking to get a new board, I think there are some much better options out there, like the two he mentioned. I have a similar background to you; 75yo, 75kg, first surfed in 1959, surfed regularly since the early 70s, and got into SUP surf about 12 years ago. My first board was the Fanatic Allwave 8'11" and then quickly moved to the 8'6" Allwave you have. You are correct about the boxy rails being a big part of the performance limitations of the old Allwaves. While the 2013 Allwaves did have thinner rails, Fanatic still designed it as a beginner/low intermediate board. With your surfing experience, I think you would gain a lot more by going to more high-performance designs that still offer the stability you are looking for. I have owned six different boards since the Allwaves and all of them were big step ups in performance. After the six boards I progressed through, and after demoing many more, my current favorite is the Sunova Ghost that thegreatsup mentioned. For my age and background, the 8'10" x 31.5" @ 137.8lts is a perfect blend of performance and ease of use.

Put the money down for a new 2023 allwave 8.7 31” 135lt which will arrive soon, hopefully.Fanatic is getting rid of all the allwave stock to push the Duotone brand, so price of the new old stock is vey atractive!

Unfortunately Sunovas Ghost are not widely available in Spain and their prices over here double my new coming board. My objective is to be reasonably comfortable while waiting for the line, the surf side is going to be ok.

If i progress reasonably, there will be time for going shorter!

Thanks Suppers!

Great choice, I had the older model wich had thicker rails but stil surfed good with the right fins that is, not the stock.
Had a go on the newer model is some very choppy conditions but it felt good .
I also moved to Sunova and now Smik, but Fanatic makes good quality boards, considering the price difference, its a go!
