So a novice here playing around with fun sized and combos on my creek.. found it really loosened up with fc7sides and fc5 rear ...
a question .. does going down in fin size effect the speed on a wave ???

Yeah, I've been doing the same since we've had somewhat consistent conditions, so I ride a 8'8" JL SuperTech mostly, so I've been switching between a set of medium and large fins mostly built for speed (AM1's, Blackstix). I also ride with a RipCurl SearchGPS watch so I actually have some data to backup my tests. Here's what I've found and some generalities on fins:
Given the same fin setup (thruster, quad, etc.) - the smaller the fin, the faster the board will go because there's less drag, the compromise is control and drive off the fins.
Given the same size fin setup - quads are faster, but a thruster setup (board dependent, wave dependent, etc.) will generally turn in more of a pivot if you are back on the stomp pad, etc. Again, this is pretty generalized and depends on the board, rider, etc.
So.......I'm roughly 75 kg/175 lbs. on a 112L board, riding generally slow, mushy waist-chest waves on this board. I've found that medium thruster setup is my favorite so far, the large fins hold better on bottom turns, but I lose 1 MPH on average or so, and you can tell.
Size/stats are on the futures/FCS website.
