Looking at buying my first sup, I've never surfed before, but I do wakeboard, snowboard and skateboard,

I've been looking at a Bombala 10'5 x 34 x 4½ x 189L

I'm wanting one to do some small wave surfing and also some flat water paddles

Would this board be a good option or is another board a better fit, I'm looking to spend no more than 1500

Roughly 78kg and about 180cm tall

I'm a few kilos heavier and a few centimeters taller and have been learning to sup surf this year on a Starboard Whopper, which is a similar size to that board. It's been a great board for me to learn on but it's a bit slow to paddle on the flat. My mate, who's done a lot of windsurfing and a little 'normal' surfing is enjoying learning to sup surf on a Sunova "the one" 9'5" x 32" @160L. While anything in this range of sizes would probably be ok, I'm guessing you'd be more suited to and get more longevity out of a board the size of "the one" or a little longer for flat water paddling.

It looks OK for flat water but I think you'd soon outgrow it for surfing particularly at your weight.

I think something slightly narrower and lower volume would suit you better and last you longer. I'd also look look at used boards and maybe spend the money you save on a decent paddle?

But used if you can. Your progression in skills is likely to be so fast that you want something else very soon, and if you buy used you'll lose virtually no money at re-sell. Try something between 10 and 11ft long and 30-32" wide.

Two great boards to choose from is the 9'5''x 32'' Mana from Naish.. and the 9'5''x 32'' Mini Whopper from Starboard..

Cheaper options are these same boards second hand or ex rental/demo..

Another cheaper option is the 10'x 32'' Elements by NSP.. or similar sizes in other brands..

For better flat water performance 10'6''x 30'' will work well at your weight.. demo, demo, demo..

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Naish Nalu. I've got a 10'6 Nalu and fitted a good set of thruster fins and it's really fun in the surf and on flat water. Very stable with good glide and manoeuvrability which is what you need for an allrounder.
Its been around a while and has been copied by other board makers.
